I am an Australian who has lived in England. I was only there for a year. Don't get me wrong, it's a great place but a lot of these things you mentioned were a bit of a drag. I was on a good salary but paying a little more than half of it on a one room, share bathroom and kitchen deal. I couldn't save money while I was there. There were long queues everywhere like Boots and the post office. All I wanted was a newspaper or a stamp and getting these things could take up to an hour. What was most frustrating was that up to a third of the check out points were unmanned - sorry, unpeopled. The message sent here was that management didn't really care about this frustration that must have been felt by all its customers.

Where I lived, there were lots of roundabouts which was effective in relieving traffic congestion but as a pedestrian, there was often no place to safely cross the roads. The engineers simply didn't put the walking person into their equation.

Yeah ! These were the hassles I felt when I was there. The people were great so that relieved the frustration somewhat.

I'd consider Australia, mate but I fear we are going the same way. Our rat race is maybe five years behind your's but it's catching up. Hong Kong is worth more than a passing thought.

We moved to Spain almost 5 years ago. Yes, it is busy in July and August but the relaxed attitude of the Spanish and the low cost of living far outweighs the difficulties parking in August! The wonderful weather is also a real bonus. One word of warning, be 100% sure that you are able to spend 24/7 with the person you are coming over with. We have seen several people return to the uk because even though they may have been married many years, they had not spent 24 hours a day with them! Also, unless you have at least one fluent language in addition to English, or a good trade, don't assume you will find work easy because its not. Too many people come over and invest life savings in bars only to see them collapse after a few months. Research beforehand and don't as the spanish say, "leave your brains on the tarmac". Finally, be prepared to adapt to the Spanish way of living - they have been doing it for years and it really does make sense! Good luck.

In the North East of Thailand. Everything, food, cigarettes, houses, clothing and petrol are cheap. The weather for me, an Englishman, is always warm to hot. The people are the friendliest and most caring that I have ever met. Yes, I did get fed up, with everything mentioned in the question, in the U.K. I left there in September 1996 and have not and will not ever return.

All of the above prompted me to move out of the UK. Thought about Australia etc but too many scary critters for me. We settled on Tenerife four years ago and love the 'manaña' attitude of the Spanish, oh except when we need something done in a hurry LOL.

I am happy living in the UK, just not where I am. I want to live in Central London. But I would also love to live in Paris, Sydney or Byron Bay, Australia.

I would love to live in USA just to see what it was like!! I would also like to see what it would be like to live in France or Jersey.

I have always wanted to live in another country for a while and I think everybody should experience this as it would give people more tolerance and experience of other peoples cultures
