My doxie was at the vet this morning for a routine checkup and shots. He bit the doctor while he was trying to listen to his heart. The doc says that my doxie is a very agressive dog. He advised me that it was beyond being scared because he was a the vet. He said that I should consider having his large biting teeth removed to prevent injuy if he was to bite someone. He has never bitten anyone before. He has been blind since birth, and I think this really contributes to his agression towards people he does not know. Has anyone ever had this procedure done on their pet? Do you think this is a good idea?

The vet actually suggested this?!?

Sister, find yourself a new vet.

Your dog is clearly not aggressive. He bites out of fear. Put yourself in his place. Imagine being blindfolded and led into a doctor's office (or what you can only assume must be a doctor's office because you can not see your surroundings). You can hear and smell everything, and then someone you are unfamilliar with starts touching you. If you were to strike out and punch or pull hair or something, how far would it be for the doctor to suggest removing your hands so you couldn't do it again, when all you were doing was trying to protect yourself...A little harsh, but its basically the same concept

Try talking to an animal behavioralist about his issues. They may be able to help you train your dachshund to handle these situations better.

I have never heard of a vet saying to have a dogs teeth removed because of biting. The only reason any teeth should ever be removed is if there's an infection or if the tooth is dead. Most vets will either suggest giving your dog a sedative before coming in to the vets for a check up or they'll just use a muzzle during the exam. You should really consider going to another vet.

get a better vet.

not many vets would give that kind of advice.

however not many vets care much for aggressive dogs.

my chow mix is terrible at the doctor but he is friendler at home with new people so you can't really take this vet's word.

my vet give my chow a sedative to get the job done that he needs when he is there.

aside from that , obedience classes, and a lot of love as a reward for being non-aggressive will do the trick . My chow is much better as he used to snap when someone came to the door or if you tried to take something he was eating that he shouldn't. also a water bottle mist in the face is helpful when he forgets.

but don't take out his teeth.

Why not try a muzzle???? I would imagine that with your dog being blind, that he gets scared sometimes. I am shocked that a Vet would suggest this. I am also surprised that a Vet would not have muzzled your dog before the examination, if he knew your dog. Muzzles dont hurt the dog--they just protect other animals and other people.

Sounds very cruel to me. Aggressive dogs get that way because they haven't been trained properly, so to pull his teeth out seems very unfair as it's not his fault. Obviously your dog has extra problems because he is blind. By the way, what is a 'doxie'? Presumably it is a breed of dog?

His biting teeth? Then you'd have to remove them all. No, that sounds like a very bad idea. Spend your money on training if your dog is that aggressive.

Don't pull healthy teeth.
Instead, invest your money in good training. Get a behaviorist if you think it might help, but teach your dog to be a better canine citizen.
Good luck.
