Matthau was married twice, to Grace Geraldine Johnson (1948-1958), and Carol Marcus (August 21, 1959 until his death on July 1, 2000). He had two children, Jenny Matthau and David Matthau, with his first wife, and a son, Charlie Matthau, with his second.

Walter Matthau died of full cardiac arrest in California, at the age of 79. After heart surgery, doctors discovered that he had colon cancer, which had spread to his liver, lungs and brain.
