Hi, JUJU
Don't feed you dog that, please. It ranks an F on this chart. I hope it helps you. It's a chart I found and you should notice that foods such as IAMS, PEDIGREE, SCIENCE DIET and EUKANUBA and PRO PLAN score very low on the chart. This is real and it's sad. It's not like this is snobbism. Dogs really need this food to be healthy and live for up to 7 years more. Consider it. You'll save on the vet bills.
Giving Dry Dog Food a Grade:
Start with a grade of 100:
For every listing of "by-product", subtract 10 points
For every non-specific animal source ("meat" or "poultry", meat, meal or fat) reference, subtract 10 points
If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points
For every grain "mill run" or non-specific grain source, subtract 5 points
If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first five ingredients (i.e. "ground brown rice", "brewer’s rice", "rice flour" are all the same grain), subtract 5 points
If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2 meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points
If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points
If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3 points
If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points
If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract 2 points
If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is allergic to other protein sources), subtract 2 points
If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points
If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog isn’t allergic to wheat), subtract 2 points
If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog isn’t allergic to beef), subtract 1 point
If it contains salt, subtract 1 point
Extra Credit:
If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points
If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist, add 5 points
If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points
If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points
If the food contains fruit, add 3 points
If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3 points
If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2 points
If the food contains barley, add 2 points
If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2 points
If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point
If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point
For every different specific animal protein source (other than the first one; count "chicken" and "chicken meal" as only one protein source, but "chicken" and "turkey" as 2 different sources), add 1 point
If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point
If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are pesticide-free, add 1 point

I checked with three Dog Food Companies. Dry food is OK!
Certain brands of wet food are not OK and have been recalled.
Look at the label on your dog food...there should be an 800 number...ask them if it is safe!
Good Luck,
Bob P.

Your safe with your ProPlan. The only Purina products being recalled are the Mighty Dog wet foods. No dry food is in the recalls.

www.menufoods.com/recall
Here's the full story:
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been informed that Menu Foods, Inc., a private-label pet food manufacturer based in Statesville, Ontario, Canada, is recalling all its "cuts and gravy" style dog and cat food produced at its facility in Emporia, Kansas between December 3,
2006 and March 6, 2007. The products are sold in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The recall was prompted by consumer complaints received by the manufacturer and by tasting trials conducted by the manufacturer. There has been a small number of reported instances of cats and dogs in the United States that developed kidney failure after eating the affected product.
Ten deaths, one dog and 9 cats, have reported at this time. The firm has undertaken extensive testing of the pet food products in question, but to date has been unable to find the source of the problem.
The products are packaged in cans and pouches under numerous brand names and are marketed nationwide by many pet food retailers including Ahold USA Inc., Kroger Company, Safeway, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., PetSmart, Inc., and Pet Valu, Inc.
Menu Foods, Inc. has identified the potentially contaminated products on the Internet at www.menufoods.com/recall. Consumers who have any of these products should immediately stop feeding them to their pets. Dogs or cats who have consumed the suspect feed and show signs of kidney failure (such as loss of appetite, lethargy and vomiting) should consult with their veterinarian. Menu Foods, Inc. is notifying retailers by telephone and mail and is arranging for the return of all recalled products.
FDA is conducting an investigation and working with Menu Foods, Inc. to ensure the effectiveness of the recall. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-866-895-2708. Consumers who wish to report adverse actions or other problems can go to http://www.fda.gov/opacom/backgrounders/complain.html
to contact the FDA complaint coordinator in their state.

The recall was wet food with the Walmart, kroger and Safeway labels in cans and foil pouches bought between Dec 06 and March 07. No dry food was mentioned. They did however, mention that it was the same people who make Iams and Eukaneuba. It really upset us because we feed our dogs the Kroger brand wet mixed with dry. Thankfully our furry children are alright.

The recall was on the "bits and gravy" style food in cans and pouches. If you feed dry food, you're not affected.
You can find the entire recall list here:

From what I heard on the news this morning, they (Menu
Foods, Inc) are now suspecting "wheat" product problem.
Science Diet Catfood is also on the list now (according
to the newscasters).
On March 16, 2007 a press release memo to the Business/
Financial Editors stated:
Paul K Henderson, President and CEO of Menu Foods
stated, "We take these complaints very seriously and,
while we are still looking for a specific cause, we are
acting to err on the side of caution. We will do whatever
is necessary to ensure that our products maintain the
very highest quality standards."
That memo also stated that:
"feedbacks were coming from the United States and
not Canada".
"The Fund has, however, discovered that timing of the
production associated with these complaints, coinscides
with the introduction of an ingredient from a new supplier."
My thoughts: Wheat Whey untested prior to production.

You can also check IAMS own site:
www.iams.com
Please do your research on dog food over the internet. The Whole Dog Food Journal takes no advertising from manufactures and publishes a yearly guide to the most nutritional pet food made every year. READ THE LABEL; UNDERSTAND the ingredients and NOT the hype on the package. You can buy holistic natural dog food with high quality lamb or beef, whole grains that are all HUMANE GRADE. Azmira food is CLINICALLY proven healthy food for less then $.68 for a 50 Pd dog. Ignorance is the only reason someone would feed their dog Beneful at $.87. No matter what the company make sure it is humane grade!!! Surely no one who loves their dog would knowingly feed it dead, disease, disabled and/or dying sick animals shot full of antibiotics, growth hormones and chemicals regardless if their vet tells them its a "good food" or they saw a commercial that told them it was good for their pet. Keep in mind Vets not only make good commissions off the food the sell they also get rewards, gifts and bonuses for sales. Vets in general do NOT have nutritional education and sadly "prescribe" pet food from these same companies as part of their earnings daily.
I would never consider feeding any of my pets ANY of the poor quality foods that Menu Foods makes. Take a look at the LONG list of company's that they sell their food to for these same companies to stick their labels on the can, goes to show doesn't matter what names on the label it's all the same in the can. Labels from Iams, Eukanbu, Nutro and many other cheap dog food sellers now are having their dog food recalled as it has been KILLING our pets. Do you have any idea how many pets must have died BEFORE this big of a recall was made? How many more companies and or labels will be added to the recall list before this is all done with? The root cause has of yet to be identified so I would throw out EVERYTHING by all these companies', the risk is not worth it to me, is it to you and your pets?
Please take your pets health into your own hands. They are what they eat and dry dead poor grade kibble or soft food is the root cause of most allergies, hotspots, ear infections and of cancer. Most Vets’ DO NOT STUDY nutrition any more then most doctor's do. SEE the label is just that, what is inside is preservatives, fillers, artificial colors and the garbage from the human food industry packaged all pretty for you to believe you are feeding your dog something good.
Google "dog food the 4 D's" and read away. Search Amazon for Holistic pet books and see what ALL the natural vet's that study nutrition recommends. Make a wise healthy decision for your best friends. GET YOUR HANDS ON THE 2006 AWARD WINNING Book "Scared Poopless: The Straight Scoop on Dog Care" (http://www.amazon.com/scared-poopless-st...
Care/dp/0977126501) This book is a pure joy to read as it is written from the dogs prospective and educates you on what choices you really have in regards to everything from medical types of vets, alternative care, vaccines or titers to foods.
While you’re at it study up on vaccines too. I will leave you with a scary thought. The EXACT same amount of vaccine for a 5 Pd Maltese is given to a 150 Pd Iris Wolf Hound! WHY?
Choose for your pet wisely for they are unable to choose for themselves. If they could I don't believe they would pick dead granola every meal for the rest of their lives even if it was humane grade. Give them real food full of enzymes, vitamins, natural probotics and life giving energy.

I hope they put something like that up at our local Dillons . . I was there the other day and didn't see much mentioned about a recall, but I don't look closely at the foods there. I don't know anyone that feeds this food, but I DO know a lot of people who watch WIBW. . hopefully they'll at least mention it on the news. LG: Petco, and I've purchased from the farm store a few times.
