I feel like I should be able to figure this out on my own. I have potty trained many kids before but my son, who is 3 yrs old, has been pee-pee potty trained since last summer...no problem! But the one time he pooped in the potty, he looked at it, backed up and has never done it again! I have tried everything....reading on potty, candy, incentives, big boy underwear, etc. He just runs and hides and I have only caught him twice in the process and ran him to the potty. He doesn't care that it's on his bottom...he doesn't seem to even notice sometimes that he's done it! He starts preschool in the fall and I have GOT to get him fully trained. Any new ideas, personal stories that worked for you? I would be most grateful for an answer that will solve this problem!!
:)Thanks!

If you can figure out aproximate times that he has to go, I did the following.
When I knew my son had to go, I would take him to the toilet,
remove his pants, and place him backwards facing the toilet bowl. He had to sit there until he went. ( never more than 10 minutes) When he would have a bowl movement, he was rewarded with 50 cents which he would place in his piggy bank.
I then sat him down with an advertisement from Toys-are-us and had him pick out a toy that he wanted. Then I told him that when he had Poo-pooed in the toilet X many times he would have enough to get that toy!
He was excited that he would be getting that toy and started asking if it was time to go poop! It took him a while to recognise that he had to go BEFORE he'd actually done it and it took him a month to save for his toy, but on the day he had enough, I took him to the store and he purchased it all bu himself with piggybank in hand.
It was fun for him and he learned at the same time.
Please try this. You can also use stars on a graph to show him how many times he needs to go.

Good luck!!

The first answer by Lisa was good. Why is it no one really answers the poop questions. Any way do try to figure out when he is most likely to go. Children do think that poop is nasty. It looks different in the potty then in diapers on training pants. And boys general don't care if there dirty on their bottom. Patience is important. Most parents get frustrated on how long it takes a child to poop and stop them and go on. Just remember he has to learn how those muscles work. When they mess themselves they have pressure on their rectum and then they push. But on the potty that's different. Remind him that big boys that go to pre-school know how to poop on the potty, and he don't want to be embarrassed if he has a accident. Do check the pre-school and see if this will be a problem. Here where I live they like them to be totally potty trained, but if for the rare occasion there not they will still take them. Sometimes positive pre-pressure works on training like this. The first time a child tells him they don't want to play with him because he makes a mess, he might change his mind about the poop in the potty. Good luck.
