Its actually a mistranslation, what Jesus was actually saying was,

"I WANNA ROCK", but some scholars actually have this as "I LOVE ROCK AND ROLL SO PUT ANOTHER QUARTER IN THE JUKE BOX BABY".

There is some debate within modern Academia.

LOL
He was referring to the rock of Peter's confession that Jesus Christ is the Son of God [not Peter himself - Catholics believe this verse makes Peter the first Pope].

Just take those old records off the shelf;
I'll sit and listen to them by myself;
Today's music ain't got the same soul;
I like that old time ROCK N' ROLL...
--Bob Seger--

edit
Deke I can't believe you're calling KISS old.
**plink** there goes another gray hair LOL

Jesus is a rocker. No RAP, no blues, no fancy Jazz. Just pure, unadulterated rock.

And the correct translation is, "give that boy some freedom, let him move around, don't get in his way, you'll only bring him down. mama won't you let him, let him play some rock and roll." Very spiritual.

Jesus told Peter that Peter was just a little pebble, but upon Himself (the Rock) He was going to build his church. Right before Jesus' crucifixion, when He gave His life for the sacrifice required for our chance of salvation, he told Peter after he was converted to feed His flock!

Jesus was really saying, "Up the rock!" He was getting all hyped, but some semi-deaf historian mistakenly heard “upon this rock." Silly historians with their no hearing aids at the time.

hahahah...I love Rock too, but that is not the rock the Lord was talking about.

Peter recognized by revelation of the Spirt of God, who the Lord really was.

It is upon that rock..of Revealed knowledge...that Christ has built his Church.
(thanks you gave me a good laugh this morning!)
15He said to them, But who do you [yourselves] say that I am?

16Simon Peter replied, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.

17Then Jesus answered him, Blessed (happy, fortunate, and [d]to be envied) are you, Simon Bar-Jonah. For flesh and blood [men] have not revealed this to you, but My Father Who is in heaven.

18And I tell you, you are [e]Peter [Greek, Petros--a large piece of rock], and on this rock [Greek, petra--a [f]huge rock like Gibraltar] I will build My church, and the gates of Hades (the powers of the [g]infernal region) shall [h]not overpower it [or be strong to its detriment or hold out against it].

Those who lean unto there own understanding of scripture are leading others astray and blinded by their "pride!" But this has to occur for the Kingdom of God is coming to this earth and establish His way as the only way.

Pride is man's downfall. The End of the circle of man's self rule will be the beginning of Christ's Kingdom but that "pride" must be broken first!
