Assuming you're in the US...

You're allowed to take liquids or gels if they're in containers that hold no more than 3 oz, all of which are in a single quart-sized clear plastic zipper-top bag.

The following liquids can be carried in larger quantities and are not required to be in a plastic bag:
-Prescription medication or other necessary medical items (including contact solution)
-Diabetic passangers may carry necessary liquids including juices.
-Breast milk, baby forumula, juice, or baby food provided that an infant or small child is traveling.

You're supposed to remove all liquids from your carry on bag, declare them to TSA, and send them through the x-ray separately from your bag (in the plastic tray with your shoes if you want, just so long as they're not a bag appart from the clear plastic one).

That's current as of yesterday, but you can always check the TSA website (www.tsa.gov) for current restrictions.

If you're not in the US, restrictions may be different. I believe that in many places the restrictions are the same except that it's 100 ml instead of 3 oz, but if your flight originates outside the US (so you're not dealing with TSA) then you should check with your airline for the current restrictions.

Go to http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm This has the most current information directly from the TSA.
