A whine could be lots of things, but I wouldn't be surprised if your alternator dies in the next couple of days. When the electronics start going bad, they make this wierd high pitched noise.

Other common problems may be the idler / tensioner pulley bearings, but those are usually more of a growl.

BTW, Ron C isn't correct about pontiac engines and head gasket failure. They have had some issues with intake manifold gaskets leaking.

It's a pontiac they all make that sound when they start to get a bit older..nothing to worry about my friend. The only thing i suggest you watch for on ANY pontiac engine is for any antifreeze pooling on the top of the engine..that's the first sign of your head gasket about to blow..Pontiac motors are famous for blowing head gaskets till the year 2002 when they fixed this problem by changing the gasket to a better one..

If its a standard trans, and it started in reverse, then your transmission (internal)is the cause.End play problem. This was common with this type of trans.(think its a mitsubishi). If you can live with it do.If not you will need your trans overhauled.Lots of $.Gm had a bulletin on this and i have repaired many.Good luck
