Is this a safe surgery? My vet uses only Isoflurane. Pup is 9 months getting spayed April 2nd, had a blood test. Vet says all is well. She is healthy. However Urea is up a bit, might be from eating chicken night before and stealing cat food. I have removed the cat food so she can't steal it anymore. I heard that if there was kidney problems the urea and creatinine would be very high at the same time. Anyone know about this. My pup is not sick, I am not looking for what to do, just want some other opinions. Please be polite have had people being really rude on here. Thanks alot.

It sounds like you are ready and so is your pup.. if you have had the proper blood tests done she will be fine.. your vet seems to be informed and capable...iso is safer because they tend to wake up much faster and if there is any problems then they can do it ASAP... You vet seems to be informed.. go for it...good luck..smile

I also agree with the rude haters on answers.... they drive me a bit crazy when I have given a perfectly good answer and they dont agree or they are just not nice people they put down stupid answers or sick answers or thumbs down on everyone... its sad but it happens all the time...smile

I'm not exactly sure what you are looking for in an answer. You asked a lot of questions. Spaying your dachshund is not any different than spaying any other breed of dog. The surgery is relatively safe and routine. With any anesthetic and surgical procedure, there are always risks, in dogs, humans, cats, any animal. Iso is a very normal anasthetic for animals. Urea being slightly elevated should not be abything to worry about. Your vet would let you know if he/she thought something was seriously wrong. Listen to your vet.

Spaying a doxie is the same as any other dog. No harder at all. They are tough dogs and tend to be quite quick to recover from anestesia. Not all do but many do.
It is much better for her health to have her spayed as it will lower her risk of cancer so much. And she will never get pyometra. That can be deadly if not caught in time.
Spays are routine and very safe and your vet will moniter her and send her home when she is ready.
She may not want to run about and play much and may not eat for the first day after but with in a day or two she will be back to normal. The hardest thing is usually to keep them quiet for a week.
Stealing cat food could make her urine off a bit as the protein in cat fod is very high. If the vet were worried about her kidneys being comprmised he would not do the surgery.

your dog will be fine, yes there is always a risk when surgery is involved , but that was what the blood work was for and don't worry that sounds good too, just make sure to follow all post surgical instructions that you are given, and make sure she has NO food the night before or the day of the surgery that is very important, take care! PS my dachshund steals cat food too!

Nope - the actual surgery is the same. The removal of the uterus and ovaries. Isoflurane is human grade anesthesia - the best on the market. I wouldn't worry too much about the Urea levels - test them again a day or two before the surgery if you are still concerned.

Thanks for being a responsible pet owner!

We have had dachshunds all my life. Spaying them is no different than any other breed.

You've done the right thing by getting blood tests done. =]

Best thing to do is spay. It eliminates uterine cancer and greatly reduces the risk of breast cancer.

Spay is no different than any other female dog.

No. Maybe they should use IV medication instead? I would get a second opinion.
