avoid steroid shots in weight bearing joints, they do more damage than good.basically work on the muscles to the knees and get good diet and exercise for overall health.only if a ligament is torn or a meniscus is torn should you consider surgery.

Your probably going to have to go with the major surgery, cranking up on roid dosage or taking opiods could become addicting and damaging to your health.

I'd reccomend the surgery to patch up what you can, then try testing with the steroids.

Steroid shots are supposed to reduce the inflammation not cure the problem. Corticosteroids mimic the effects of cortisone and hydrocortisone — hormones your body produces naturally in your adrenal glands, which sit atop your kidneys. Corticosteroids help control:

Stress of illness and injury
Immune function
Inflammation

You may very well have to undergo surgery to correct the underlying problem. Have you had an MRI on your knee yet?

Steroid shots don't necessarily give immediate relief, but they stay in your system for up to 1 year and can help down the road.
