We have about 18 chickens. I like to eat the fresh eggs, but one out of every three or four will have little tiny chunks of red stuff in them, Probably half the size of a grain of rice. I just use the egg shell and pull them out. The rest of the egg looks fine. Any suggestions on how to prevent this?

Thanks for the answers! I think that clears it up. No the eggs are not fertilized. There are no roosters in the pen. we butchered all of them. They were giving the chickens a beating.

These tiny spots are not harmful and are caused by the rupture of a blood vessel during formation of the egg. You can't prevent it.

The red spot is the beginning of a chick starting to form.

Continue to pick it out with the eggshell and you will come to no harm.

I suggest you try to collect your eggs more frequently, as this only occurs after the egg has been sat on for a short period of time.

I check for eggs morning and night and I only have about 20 chookies myself.

Those eggs are fertilized and the red spots are the beginning stages of chicks.
