Do you actually bury them? And if you send them to the veterinarian, what do they do with them? What is the most common procedure to get rid of a dead dog's body? Any alternatives?

Some people bury them in their yards, some bury them in a pet cemetery. I chose to cremate mine and I have an altar in their memory with their ashes. When my time comes, all of our ashes will be blended together and then tossed into the wind.

You can take the dog to the vet and they should be able to dispose of the remains properly.

A lot of people choose to get their pet's body cremated. You typically leave the body with your vet and they in turn give it to the company they have contracted with that cremates all of the deceased animals for that particular veterinarian. There is typically a fee for this.

If you want your dog's ashes back, you have a few options. One is the "group" option (sorry, not sure what else to call it!) where several animals bodies are cremated at the same time (including yours) and you receive a portion of the ashes back. Another option is to have only your animal cremated and receive only their ashes back. This second option tends to be a little more expensive, but you know who you have when you pick up your urn. Morbid, but true.

Some people choose to have their dog's ashes placed in a decorative urn, but you can also find pendants that you can place a bit of ash in and wear around your neck. I've also seen some "pet gems" where they take the cremains and somehow add them to a zircon or even diamond for you to keep with you.

If you choose not to have your dog cremated, you have the option of burying him yourself. Keep in mind that this is no easy task. You will need to wrap his body in several layers of plastic (trash bags typically work) and dig a hole at least 6 feet deep so that other animals have difficulty reaching the body. I would lay a tarp in the hole and then cover the body with it as well before replacing the soil. Many people choose to cover the grave with large stones, like a cairn, to make sure scavengers can't dig there.

Another common practice these days are pet cemeteries. Google the phrase, ask your veterinarian, or check the yellow pages for more information if it's something you're interested in.

I'm sorry for your loss. Hope this helps.

I've buried my animals...i used to work at a vet's ...i quit after a dog was put to sleep in my arms without any forewarning..she would hold the bodies in the freezer and later take them to the animal shelter to dispose of them (dispose sounds so ugly doesn't it) some other animals, depending on the type of disease they died from were sent to labs to do research on them...my friends cat just died and she had it buried in a pet cemetary and had a small memorial made..the vet did it for her and made a paw print with the cat's name...i've also heard of cremation

The veternarian I use takes care of their bodies. I do not ask what they do with them... though I have a pretty good idea.
I don't like pet cemetaries in the yard, so, its best for me.
Some crematories will also cremate them and put their ashes in a nice urn for you to keep also.

Yes, people do bury their dogs when they die. When our family dogs died we placed them in coolers and buried them in the back yard. The vet will do like a cremation for your pet, but it might cost you. Have you considered a pet cemetery?

Many people have them burried they have special pet cemeteries. Many people have them cremated and either keep the ashes or scatter them. Some burry them at home in their own yards but in many places that is not legal.
Many are dumped in garbage dumps or mass cremated and the ashes dumped.

my vet had mine creamated for me and now she sits on my mantle. If you leave it with your vet with no instructions as to getting the ashes back they will usually do it as a mass creamation...its kinda sad..did you lose you dog? or if you live in a place thats its legal bury it... thats the natural way... but as I live in the city limits I could not do that... sorry to hear of your loss... good luck..

when an animal dies at my house, we bury it. My dad has burried a dog, a cat, and a lizard. (I'm 11)

Just bury it in your yard or have him/her creamated. Don't get a little grave for it though. you can do that, but it is expensive.
