I'm a Christian and I like to bite the heads off of kittens...I don't think we're cruel at all...why do you ask?

People are cruel, not just Christians.
God wont' force you to go to heaven if you don't want to go. He's very polite that way.
Hell is a place where God isn't.
No hope
no peace
no love
no light
no comfort
Everything that God is isn't there. Do you know who talked more about hell that anyone in the bible? Jesus, why? Because he didn't want anyone to go there. I first became a Christian to escape Hell, then I found the love and peace that is only in Jesus. Now I have joy, joy that's not dependent on my circumstances. My life may suck and I still have inner joy because I now this is all temporary.
Take the time to learn about the man Jesus. He was here and he was who he claimed to be. Pray to him he will be there. "Knock and the door will be opened."
You may find the link I sent interesting. It's a free movie about Hell. It was started by a Dr who was an atheist and saw a man go to hell during a stress test. This Dr later became a christian. Pretty interesting.

Well, sure there have been and still are cruel fanatic christians, but i'd say it's a minority.
There's not one single religious group that has been around for a while that has not been involved, created or supported various cruel activities for whatever magnificent holy purposes...
In reality those are just a bunch of rarely misled, desperate souls. The majority sure may be as misled, but just not desperate enough to make a big deal of it.
Hell btw is fairytale stuff. The kind of garbage you pull out to scare people when you've got no better idea to come up with. It's worked quite well long ago but nowadays people are more scared of the dentist than going to hell.
Peace

I am a Christian, and hell is very awful, it is as it states in the Bible, if you do not accept Jesus as your Savior you will be punished in the eternal life, whether you want to spend your eternal life in Heaven or hell.
I hope that I do not offend you when I say this to you, but I do hope that you find Jesus, if you have not already.
Have a Blessed Day!!!

Consider the torture methods of the inquisition, then look at how GW has insisted that the USA is allowed to torture terrorist suspects which they are doing systematicly at guantanimo bay. Then have a look at how many christians think it's good to hit kids.
I remember going to a chistian brothers school and the delight the teachers took in giving out "six of the best".
I'm there's a huge number of christians out there who are caring, loving people, but hey...there's a lot of anedotal evidence to suggest the average christian has a bit of a cruel streak.

A true Christian does not believe in hell in that sense. The scriptures do not teach that God would torment someone forever for being a sinner.

Most Christian don't think like that. In addition there is no hell yet. Hell is on earth according to the bible (Revelation 20: 3-15) I think at one point though all religion were cruel here including Christian.

I do not think that hell is a torture chamber. In fact, the place you called hell is probably much more desirable than any place here presently on earth. I think that we will be consigned to the "level" in heaven commensurate with our acts here on earth. It will be a "hell" knowing what you might have been or might have done to get to the highest level where God dwells.

It's an interesting question. I think that the concept is this: heaven is a place of nothing but love, and by contrast hell is a place of the "absence of love."
So God is not actually tormenting people, He is just allowing those who accept Him to reap the benefits of His love, and leaving the rest to their own devices.
But it raises two follow-up questions for me: Why wouldn't He just give His love to everyone for all eternity, even those who didn't deserve it? And in Hell, even though there is no Love, coould there still be Fun?

It really don't depend on Christians or any other religion or cult! It's a spiritual world of the unknown, and there are too many things unknown to us. Just a look at the sky on a clear night would be enough to inform you of how small we are.
Cruelty! no, but wait a minute; Is there cruelty amongst us!

Christians are human. What do humans do to live? They make mistakes in the process. Before Saul was Paul, he killed lots of Christians. In fact, the Christians are the one who suffered the most. The Christians are not forcing you to accept Christ. Its your own choice indeed. Christ is giving free will. But can human live on free will without the Bible? It would be like the day God not well known to human race. Because of God's love that Christ died on the cross to pardon all human's sins. We would be saved because of God's love. Even Christ himself does'nt know what is God's plan to the people on earth. God can even make a criminal to be a king.
