when i maried my partner, 4 years ago after 7 years together, my eldest son from my previous marriage wanted to do a reading at the wedding, we were both delighted, he was 13 at the time, we encouraged him to speak from the heart and make up his own speech, he did just that and my god it went down a storm, he just had us all in tears, of both laughter and joy, he had practised in the mirror to himself and the day was great for him, he just spoke from the heart and it came across really well. we were both so so proud of him. my advice is to let her speak from the heart and trust me it will be wonderfull, ok so my son was 13 and his daughter is only 8 but enlist the help of your friends and get them to help her out with the finer details but remember that what she says is from her heart and indeed head, trust me you will remember it for a lifetime because it will be her own words, good luck and hope that helped?

How about a Shakespeare sonnet. My choice would be the 'Let me not unto the marriage of true minds admit impediments'. The language may be a little hard for an 8y.o., so you could take an extract. I have no idea how well 8yolds can think, but it would be nice to explain the meaning to the kid in advance, to add some conviction to the reading.

The key bit is right at the top: 'Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds'. It could be useful to remind the couple of that a few years down the line, when they're throwing crockery at each other because one of them did something unsavoury.

I think a lot of posters underestimate an 8 year old. If he/she is willing to practice, they can do a beautiful job.

I think that selections dealing with love from a children's book are very appropriate.

I would go to the Children's section of the library, maybe even with the 8y.o. and ask the children's librian for help. Or look at any of the 100s of books of wedding readings and find one that is short and simple.

How about the child reading a poem?

I think the nice short, but sweet poem will be lovely read by a child of that age... maybe not during the ceremony, but when the mic is open for speeches it could turn out really sweet... make sure the child is willing to do it, and its not something that he/she is being focused to do...

You can help the child make up the poem using rhyming words, go to Borders, WHSmiths, your local library and look at the ideas they have in books, or try these weblinks..

I had a friend read this fantastic Apache Wedding poem at another friend's wedding. I think it is appropriate and beautiful.
Now for you there is no rain
For one is shelter to the other.
Now for you there is no darkness
For one is counsel to the other.
Now for you there is no pain
For one is comfort to the other.
Now for you there is no night
For one is light to the other.
Now for you there is no cold
For one is warmth to the other.
Now for you the snow has ended, always
Your fears, your wants, your needs are at rest.
It is that way today, tomorrow and forever.
Now it is good and there is always shelter.
And now there is always one.
And now there is no loneliness.
Now, forever, forever you are as one.
There are two bodies.
But now there is only one heart in both
And you are as one person.

There are a few versions, so just look up Apache Wedding Poem or Apache Wedding Prayer on the web.

Why does an 8 year old need a private entertainment programme at a wedding?
It's not an everyday event, too bad to waste it with activities he or she could also do yesterday or tomorrow.

If you're afraid they'll get bored, involve them in the activities. Kids that age love to be involved. Collect empty glasses and collect orders for drinks, for instance.

Velveteen Rabbit - the mystical river section in Wind in the Willows- short sections from several places in Winnie the Poor.

Anything from Dr. Seuss or Clifford the Big Red Dog would meet your criteria.

something from a film, a romantic comedy or romeo & juliet.

Sounds a bit cheesy to me, with a little bit too much pressure on the little one too.
