Did you know God states at Leviticus 27:30-31 that money shouldn't be used to tithe? Did you know that, if money was used, a 20% penalty was to be added?

See how much you REALLY know about titheing. Take the tithe test: http://www.truthorfables.com/Tithe_Test.htm

I'm certainly not stating we should stop giving to our churches, but God never intended this aspect of the Mosaic law to carry over into the New Covenant brought by Jesus!

"Gypsy Queen," if a man "redeems" his tithes, that means he sells them. "A fifth part" is 20%. So anyone who feels that titheing is for today really needs to pay 30% (10% + 20% penalty).

Thanks for the avatar compliment!

"Birdsflies," no, the Mosaic Law only required the tithing of animals (and only then if a person's flock increased by more than either 6 or 8, I can't remember) and produce -- no other goods were to be tithed. If a person planted a small garden for personal use, it had to be tithed from.

Paul does not tell us to tithe to the storehouse 1 Cor. 16. He tells believers to "lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper," meaning set aside what seems proper to you so it may be collected. The Temple storehouse is NEVER equated with the New Covenant Church.

(continued) as you wrote, we are not under Law, but under Grace. Why then do you propose we go back to the Law and support tithing? These statements conflict with each other. Click on the link I gave above and see what you really know about tithing.

Suzanne, you are obviously very intelligent and sincere in your faith. I agree with your point and also think it wrong the way some groups treat it as a tax for attending a church. The better churches have not set rules for giving. The scriptures tell us that those who have much, much is expected of them and those who have little, little is expected of them. This concept should also apply to tithing. When i was homeless no one ever told me i could not attend the Church or the Masses just because i had shabby clothes and no money to donate. In fact the Church frequently used the donations to give me things I needed and most often without me even asking. In my opinion this is the proper usage and collection of tithes. Many people know the letter of the law but totally miss the point and do not understand the Spirit of the law, which is certainly much more important. Peace be with you.

Think that early Christians spent a lot of time discussing and deciding what in the Hebrew law had to carry over to the "New Covenant," what was OK to incorporate in the new religion and what would be left behind. The issue at the time was what in the Hebrew scripture was intended as laws for the Jewish people alone and what was intended as guides for humankind as a whole. Many of those early Christian scholars concluded that large parts of Hebrew scripture, Leviticus in particular, were intended as merely civil law for the Jewish community at the time. Thus, these laws were not binding on Christians. Some modern Christians believe that the early Christian leaders were inspired by God in making those determinations. It is really hard to determine exactly what God wants, and thus, there is a broad spectrum of opinions throughout Christianity as well as the other Abrahamic faiths.

You are looking at tithing in the law age, Not in the grace age, Yes under the law you were to give 10% of all things, food, money, clothing, ETC. But in the Grace age, that was done away with & in Romans 10:4 You see where Jesus is the END of the LAW, & in 1st Corinthians 16:1-2 Apostle Paul is telling the Christians to bring into the storehouse what God hath prosper you on the first day of the week. Now don't you think it will look nice for me to bring in a bunch of cats & dogs into a church house, No, So we have to know how to look at scriptures in it's rightful setting, Maybe you should look again at tithing & the true meaning of it in our day. We are NOT UNDER THE LAW, But under GRACE.

Do you have the right reference? My KVJ says:

Leviticus 27:(30) And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of th etree, is the LORD'S: it is holy unto the LORD. (31) And if a man will at all redeem aught of his tithes, he shall add thereto the fifth part thereof.

So where did you find the reference for Leviticus 27:31-31?

You are right. Jesus calls for us to give all.

Although, he endorsed the tithe of the Pharisees while rebuking them.
Luke 11:42
"Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.

I tithe; not because it is "required", but because I WANT to, and I know where the money is going.

Money and penalty--funny that those who do give money also take a discount on their taxes.....
but those who give their time and talents give more. Maybe people should sign up for stuff--like this week I'll bring the toilet tissue and the coffee.....

I kind of follow the rationale of Abram giving to Melchizedek. Jesus is a priest in the order of Melchizedek, and I, like Abram, want to give to God. He gave to Melchizedek, a priest of God, freely. I also want to give freely.

I have been blessed by God, and will give from what I have been blessed with.

Good to question what we do as believers, and why we do it.
