Your dog thinks it is top dog.
Sitting on your son's lap puts it in a dominant position. Plus it probably see's itself as your sons protector, so in it's eyes it was probably protecting your son.
You need to show your dog it is bottom of the pack. You should enter doors first, it should be last after your son, it should be fed after you all have eaten, all principles the Dog Whisperer uses.
You need to look up more info on this in training books etc..
Jan Fennell is excellent too.

No one can answer this question without having observed your dog and having a thorough knowledge of dog behavior. Perhaps it was "jealousy" (really possessiveness: this is my person and you can't have him), perhaps the dog was protecting your son, perhaps being physically higher made him more emboldened to threaten the other dog. If these dogs are going to be around each other on a regular basis, I recommend that you have a trainer watch the dogs together and give you some ideas to work on. Your vet should be able to refer you, or go to www.apdt.com.

The dogs i had growing up were related and pretty much got on most of the time but they do suffer with bad jealousy. There were a couple of times when blood was drawn over jealousy. Its natural dog behaviour just make sure you tell him off when he does it so he knows its wrong to behave like that.

I have a mini-dachshund with the same problem. He is the sweetest dog I have ever met, but he attaches himself to people and if any other dog comes by, he perceives it as a threat. Any aggressive behavior in animals is usually due to fear. I don't know what to do to fix the problem however, I just yell at him and roll him on his side to tell him I don't appreciate the behavior (it is what Alpha dogs do to show authority) haha it is kinda funny, but you would do it gently, the goal is not to cause pain. Hope that helped at all, if any.

Yes it sounds like jealousy,it could also be that your dog was protecting your son.Keep there visits supervised and if your dog seems to be aggresive every time it meets your mums dog then you will have to stop them seeing each other as the aggresion will become worse.

Be very careful, I had to have my dog put down last year, we had had him for 4 years and he had grown up with my 3 year old son, he was his best friend, last summer he suddenly turned for no reason and bit my son who had to have plastic surgery and over 30 stitches in his face, if your dog is becoming aggresive take it as a warning, they are very territorial and at the end of the day are animals

That sounds like protection to me. I'm no expert but having had dogs, it sounds like your dog was seeing off the potential threat to you. is this a one off or is the dog getting aggressive at other times too. If its beginning to happen regularly then you need to get it trained out of it fast to let it know that it doesn't need to protect you. that's your job. you should be protecting it. you must be top dog, so to speak.

it could be like this for a few weeks dogs just need time to get used to seeing another pet around the house my dog had to adjust to having a cat around the house it took a week or so but they learned to love eachother but usually it all depends on how old she is if its she's over a year old and u didnt spay/neuter her then she's probobly just horny or maybe she has rabies! watchout! jk well theres lots of reasons dogs do these things lemme try to think of all i can:
1. she could be feeling unappreciated
2. it might be the food your feeding her (like if u switched or something)
3. she could feel like she needs to compete with the other dog
4.the horny theory
5. she could be pregnent
6. she's probobly annoyed with the other dog
