Coming across as a bit more cold and distant is just a part of the national psyche. To get a proper explanation, you would need to trawl through the history books and do some in-depth study into cultural personalities. It is unwise to generalise about all Brits, as being aloof is generally a characteristic more common in middle-class and well-educated Brits. Working-class northerners are some of the most inviting and warm people you'll meet!

If you compare Brits to Americans, of course they'll come across as more phlegmatic. But most American hospitality and friendliness comes across as very fake and put on. Al that "Have a nice day" and "I love you!" stuff is often a facade, which I personally really dislike.

Phlegmatic?? Why? Just because we don't start a war every time someone disagrees with us. I've got news for you friend: Patience is a virtue, diplomacy saves lives dignity is in our breeding and tact and decorum didn't cost anyone anything.

I think they're far from it. We have centuries of 'stiff upper lip' to overcome before we start yelling about stuff, but we're getting there.
