Some advertising is good, it lets me become aware of products and services that I might be interested in. I buy the Sunday paper mostly just to look at the advertising as there often is a good price on something I need or want. The problem is that most advertising is for things I'm not interested in.
The worst of all advertising is for the local nightly newscast. It is always something like "Robbers, muggers and carjackers loose in the area, learn what you can do to protect yourself on the newscast at 11pm". It is 7pm, what do I do until then? Hide under the sofa?

Advertisement is boring? Yes, I do agree that sometimes advertisement can be so boring, especially when they are short, excessively repeated, and give no powerful sentences. Useless? Well, an advertisement is useless when public cannot get what the advertiser wants, and some advertisements are like this!
Actually we advertise something to attract public and reveal what the advertiser can give to customer. I think sometimes there is 'trade-offs' between effectiveness and creativity. Some ads are made so creative, it makes people laugh, cry, or stand in awe, but at the end of the day the cannot remember what product it is or what it can provide! Other ads are so monotonous, but repeated so many times so that we can sing the jingle while sleeping!
If I were the company, I would prefer the second one, although making a creative ad is always a challenge for advertisement artists. As a customer, I don't care whether they are creative or effective because I don't need those ads. I would prefer to continue watching my favorite drama or sports match. I notice ads only when they inform me something interest me.

No way. I love advertising. Can you imagine life with out the taco bell dog? or the M&M gang? I will admit that not all advertising are well made, some are boring and cheesy, like the king from Burger King and those dead rats from Quoins a while back. But there are some really well made one out there, like the series of Apple computer commercial, or all the Mini Cooper advertising. Target have some really cool commercial. Some are really touching, like all the master card "priceless" ad. Some have important message for us like the "truth" and "above influence" campaigns. Some are simply eye candy for the comsumer, think fashion and automoblie advertising. The fact is, we need advertising to feed us informations that we otherwise wouldn't get, but we should still research the subject to get the facts about it instead of taking them at face values.

If it's boring and useless, then how do you explain the millions that were spend on creative and media for advertising?
Products need to meet the consumer and the only way to do that is by advertising (I am not just saying and limiting it to press ad - it could be viral or anything) but end of the day, what you want ur product to be perceived as and known to the consumer, you need advertising as the bridge.

Advertising is a necessary tool that is vital in business promotions. They get customers interested in your product or service so maybe they buy your stuff. And remember this money makes the world go around. On a scale of 1-10 1 been the lowest and 10 been the highest need. I would give advertizing a 9. Does that answer your question?

No, not all of it. Advertising is like a game. The advertiser wants to grab the reader's attention. This is not easy to do. Therefore, he/she has to be clever enough to win you over. Then, if the advertiser is really skillful, you will part with your money to buy a product - sight unseen - that you don't need and did not know existed.
It is just part of the game.

No not really, because if they didnt advertise peope wouldn't be aware of any products. By advertising it lets reader and viewers see what they have to offer and plus thats how brands make their money by being advertised. Thats business for you.

Not if you are the reader. if you are the advertisement maker, then it s gonna be your challenge, to make people buy the product inside your ad. and challenge is never boring in advertising.
