I went with the God cannot be seen just as the wind can't be seen, but I did point out that like God, while it can't be seen His effects can be seen. God is in a newborn, and an old gramma, He is in the goodness of men and women, He is in the good food that gets on the table and in the love a family shares. This isn't a great theological argument, the child in question is two and a half, it does explain how God can be invisible and still have influence on daily happening.

He sounds like a smart kid! Let him know that some grownups don't believe in god for the very same reason, and that it is a valid question to ask. Admit that you don't know why god doesn't make himself known, even though he does it all the time in the bible. Let him come to his own conclusions.
The wind analogy is ignorant and misleading. True, you can't see the wind with the naled eye, but you can see it's effects redilly enough. Wind can be measured, and predictions can be made about it's behavior can be made through observation. The same CAN NOT be said of god.
I like the story below, and this is what I'll use to explain to my own child when I have one.

My 4yr old asked the same thing. I wasn't really sure how to answer, but I never thought about telling her about the wind, how we can't see it, but it's there. I'll have to remember that one. Also, you can tell him that God is in all of nature around us and he is what creates goodness, kindness, & love.
As for the answer that says not to brainwash your kids into believing in fairytales, Why do so many people brainwash their kids into believing in Santa Claus, but do not believe in God? I can tell there are a lot of non-believers reading these answers, because they are giving everyone that had something positive to say about God a low rating. What a bunch of negativism!

Tell him this. God is so holy and wonderful that we just cannot handle seeing him in person. You might use the word bright and compare him to the sun. Don't mix God and Santa Claus. My daughter is 6 and she hasn't asked this yet so I'm pretty impressed with your toddler.

Tell him that God is all around, he's always with you and is always there to listen even if you can't see or hear him. He's a feeling when your happy and when your sad to help you through what you need.

Tell him that God is just something people made up to explain the world and to encourage people to act good. Tell him religions have lots of good things to teach us about how to live, and lots of silly things left over from when humans knew a lot less.
You can tell him, for example, that Genesis, which contains two versions of the creation myth, including one right out of the egyptian creation myth - every detail of what is created in what order is the same.
Please don't brainwash and handicap your child with lies and fairy tales taught as truth. It makes coping with reality really difficult for some.

I went through this with my daughter with autism who can not understand things she can not see either. We explained that God is something you can't see but you can feel in your heart.
You can feel the love and know that you are always safe, loved and protected even with Mommy and Daddy aren't there. :)

my son has often asked the same. the first answerer makes a good point. i wish i'd thought of it. i would tell my son that god is everywhere. he is a spirit not flesh.we can't see a spirit. at 2 yrs, they can ususally be answered very simply. to much explaination tends to confuse them.

Tell them that is because God lives in our hearts and with each beat we have is Him letting us know he is with us all the time. That has worked for my son. He knows that Jesus is His son and that God and MawMaw live in Heaven and his heart. Good luck.
