We have a 7 month old puppy who has been in a small kennel most of her life. She's doing very well with house training but, she lacks in listening. Is she being more difficult because of being somewhat neglected or is she just a normal puppy? She got off of her outside chain when we let her out to go potty and she just ran! She wouldn't come back when called at all. My husband ended up following her around for an hour until he could finally caught her. Would obedience school help with a dog this age? Any advice is welcome. Thanks

She wasn't let outside without a leash. My son thought her outside chain was connected when he let her out and it slipped off!

If shes been in a kennel all her life she wont be properly socialised, and this may be why she is more difficult to train.... but puppies in general dont listen too well. I have 3 years of obedience training with my dog, and one of the first things I learnt was NEVER chase a dog, they just think its a great game. Put her on a long lead, call her back to you, when she comes.... reward her with a food treat, never ever call her back and punish her. Assuming she is fully vaccinated, absolutely take her to obedience school, youll have a great time, you will both learn heaps, and you will meet people with much naughtier dogs than your own.

Obedience helps with dogs of any age. Start from square 1 just as you would with an 8-10 wk old pup. Basic and build.

If she isn't listening, she shouldn't be off leash.

Definitely obedience school. That will show you the best techniques to getting immediate obedience from your puppy in a controlled setting.
