We read a lot about X servings of vegetables, and Y servings of fruit, and Z servings of chicken/fish, etc. But no matter how hard I look, I can't seem to get to the total number of servings of food we're supposed to eat in a day (on average). Every time I read about the gov'ts recommended calorie intake vs all the servings of this and that they say we should be eating, it seems to me that you can't fit the number of servings in to the recommended calorie intake. So, does anyone know what the total number of food servings per day that is recommended, and then of that total how many servings of vegetables, fruits, proteins, and grains?

You should eat between 6-8 servings of fruit and vegetables daily, 5-6 oz. of meat daily, and around 4-6 grains daily. This is a healthy way of eating. If you can't eat all of this take some vitamins to replace lost essential vitamins.

Forget about the X, Y, Z of servings. When preparing meals
1. Have more vegetables and salad on your plate.
2. Handful of carbohydrate: rice, pasta, potatoes etc.
3. Have protein with every meal: fish & chicken is best.
4. Drink at least 8 glasses of water daily.
5. Exercise at least for 20mins 3 times per week.

Yes, it's got very confusing hasn't it. And one persons view of a serving is very different from anothers. My idea of a serving my mother would dish up for the whole family and her idea of a serving I would call a garnish.

Most adults eat approximately 2 kilos of food a day. If at least half a kilo of that is fruit and vegetables you won't go far wrong.

a protien based food like meat or fish the approximate volume should me no bigger than the palm of your hand, (size and depth). Carbs like potatoes for example, 1 portion is the size if your clenched fist.

It's not an exact science, so lets not make life more complex than it already is.

Don't worry about the numbers. Eat mostly fruits & vegitables along with, eggs, lamb meat, and fish. Try to find free roaming animal products for healthier food intake. And drink lots of water that is most important of all.
