Well, first of all it would be a good idea to do a lot of shopping there. 1 dollar=7 yuan. Most of the time you can bargain, but just to warn you, a lot of the people there are aggressive when you don't buy anything from them. A strategie I use is to name your own (reasonable) price and if they say no, just walk away slowly and they might call you back.Never buy anything full price. Most of the time you can buy something for a smaller price.
If you're more into visiting historical sites, I reccommend the great wall. There are other places like tianamen, the forbidden city, and the summer palace. Personally, i liked the great wall the best because it was fun climbing it. I'm not the kind of person that likes historical sites, but the summer palace was very pretty.
Some chinese people can speak a little english, but your best bet is to try to learn a little chinese (the basics: asking where a place is, how to greet someone/say thankyou, what the price of something is). You can find a lot of different books that can help you on your trip. Good Luck!

You should learn something before you go...or it will be a waste of time...learn some chinese...any amount you learn will be appreciated...it seems to me that chinese appreciate the effort from foreignors more than the results...oh it's not hard to enjoy yourself there with a little effort
