International driving permits are no longer a requirement in EU/EEC countries providing you have a photocard driving licence. Many other countries no longer demand them either, again providing your licence carries your photograph.
To make sure visit the government website of the countries you are visiting or telephone theirr Embassies or Consulates in thei country for advice. If you do need to obtain one simply take your driving licence and two passport photographs into any AA/RAC office where for a small fee they will issue one over the counter. They are also available at AA offices at the ferry ports.

You must take a valid licence to AAA, If you plan on driving in another country call or write ahead Find out laws. Also look up a local driving school. take one ot two lessons. I had some bad rides with people new to Canada .Driving on the right side . Also freaked out in Singapore when a cab driver pulled away.

Are you in the UK? If so, you used to be able to get them from the AA.
If you have a photo driving licence most countries accept them instead, if it is a short visit. If you are emigrating you will probably eventually need a licence for that country.

I don't think you need them with the "new" type of driving licence (ID type, with card and photograph). These should be internationally acceptable. Before these were introduced, you could purchase them from places like the AA.

If you hold a full UK license then the RAC can arrange for one to be issued for you. However most countries will accept a UK license when hiring a car.

Here you go: http://www.theaa.com/getaway/idp/index.html
The IDP is, by the way, a translation of your valid licence, not a replacement for it, so you need to keep both with you (if required at all)
