The tallest individual tree in the world is Hyperion, a Sequoia (Sequoia sempervirens, or Coast Redwood) in California that is 115.5 m tall and was discovered in 2006. Hyperion is taller than the Mendocino tree, also a Coast Redwood, which was 112 m tall when it was discovered in 1998; it was the tallest known tree at that time, but by 2006 had already lost the record to Stratosphere Giant, yet another Sequoia, which was measured at 112.8 m tall upon its discovery in 2004.

In general, the Sequoia and related species produce the tallest and largest trees. The General Sherman tree is a Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) that is the largest living thing by volume, although it is only 83.8 m tall.

The tallest tree species (not an individual tree) is the Coast Redwood, growing in California.

The greatest girth around the trunk is achieved by the Montezuma Cypress in Oaxaca, Mexico.

The Giant Sequioa of the western US has the greatest volume of wood (not counting the roots, which have never been comparatively measured) and is in the top four for height, girth and age too.
