From J and P Switchgear Book I quote:-
Short circuit MVA is given by:-
(tranformer kVA x 100) / (% reactance X 1000)

In layman`s terms , if there is a short circuit supplied by a transformer, the fault level (short circuit MVA) is calculated using this formula.

% reactance is the impedance of the transformer supplying the fault.
Short circuit MVA is the fault level.

From this, fault current could be calculated as voltage is known.
