The glowing orange wires in a toaster are made from Nichrome wire.

Nichrome is nickel-chromium steel. It has fairly high resistance and is used for ignitor wires, including those used to ignite black-powder flying model rockets. These engines and ignitors can be found in *my* house, anyhow.
