You can always tell when there just about to roll. If you learn their body language so you know its going to happen you can mostly stop it, theres always going to be the one you cant though. What you do is to teach it to recall from any situation so if they decide to roll and you catch them before they go down you will get their attention and then you can call them to you. If they are mid roll then a firm NO and drag them away then give them something else to do ie a game to distract them and carry on the walk. You have to teach the dog to leave things like this alone and obey your commands every time but also make it fun for them too. It is possible to stop them rolling i do this with my dog and rarely rolls now.

the reason a dog rolls in muck is to bring a message home to everyone else, they can't say that they smelt a fox or what ever they rolled in, so they roll in the muck to let everyone at home know they came across an area where there was something of interest, i know it is fustrating but they are just finding other ways to comunicate.
I know this doesn't help you to stop the dog, but atleast you know why they do it now

I'm afraid you can't, it would be like trying to get a cat to stop hunting. The level of deterrant you'd have to use would need to be so severe it would be cruel; and afterwards the animal would be left with an instinctive behaviour with no outlet; that causes neurotic behaviour.
Its instinct that drives dogs to roll in muck and dead animals. Its so deeply ingrained theres no point in trying to retrain the dog. All you can do is keep him on the lead where theres likely to be muck, but they need a free run so its probably better to tolerate it and bathe them.

You cant that is the quick answer. It is a throwback to when all dogs were wolves, they used to roll in muck to hide their scent when hunting so the prey wouldn't smell them, The muck hid their scent and the prey wouldn't bother about them as much. The same is for a dog burying a bone it is hiding it so it is in reserve if they have a hungry day when they catch nothing.

We have a Jack Russell Cross that loves rolling in his mess. My mom has started picking all the mess up off the garden on a regular basis so he doesnt have anything to roll in. Also he is not allowed off the lead when we take him out so he doesnt have the chance to roll there either. If you catch him just give him a good telling off and a bath. Our dog doesnt do as much now as he knows he has to have a bath and that puts him off.

Roll in the muck before him, let him see what a mess it makes.

Seriously though....you can't without standing over him the whole time he's outside.

Just keep telling it to get out of there! I have the same problem when we go to the lake. If all people are gone we let the dogs off their leashes and immediately my younger dog will find a dead fish and want to roll all over it! yuck!

You can't. It's just a dog thing. They are masking their own scent - a hunting thing, unfortunately. Keep it on a lead. Happened to me last week when my tiny female shih tzu went home covered in sh1t and had to go in the bath! And why do they always do it when you're in a hurry to get out?
