i happen to have a tattoo on the center of my back, but more towards the top than the bottom. The previous poster was right, it hurts when they hit on the spinal area, but everything else is tolerable. The trick to remember is the width of the needle gun (dont know the terminology) they are using. For example, the very thin ones that do outlining are no problem, but if your getting a design with alot of shading or broad thick lines, they will use a thicker needle which hurts alot more.
The location is 75% tolerable at best, but you can do it

It's not that the nerves are more sensitive there. The fact is that the back bone is there. Any time you have a tatt done that close to a bone, it hurts more than other places on your body were you have some meat under the skin . I have some on my shoulder blades and they hurt more than the ones on my arms. If this is to be your first tattoo, go to the tattoo shop and look over the flashes (patterns) they have and pick one out or design one yourself. Take that and put it up on your bathroom mirror for at least six months. Remember, once a tattoo goes on, it's there to stay. Removing it is expensive,it will make the cost of that tatt cheap in comparision. After looking at it for so long and you still like it, by all means go get it. Also be wise and look at some of the artist's completed work, check out their shop, do they have the necessary autoclave to sterilize everything? Are they using the new throw away needles and barrels? Check it all out. Do they have the necessary license? Be wise about getting a tattoo, not in a hurry.
I'm not against tattoo's. I have tatts on my bicheps and across my back and planning on more.

I have a sun tatooed on the small of my back and it didn't realy bother me that much to have it done. It does hurt a littel when they hit the spine, but it really just felt kinda weird more than anything. I also have a slight numbness in my lower back though. The thing that bothered me the most was my shirt sticking to the ointment I had to keep on it for the first few weeks.

I have a large tattoo in the same spot and one further up, between my shoulder blades, and when the tattoo was going in over my spine it didn't really bother me that much. It's the soft fleshy areas that hurt the most to me. When I get my large tribal at the small of my back finished, I am definitely going to take some otc pain reliever.

In my personal opinion, it's really not that bad, yeah it does hurt the most when it hits ur spine but it's not anything u can't deal with. If you are thinking about getting one done and u are nervous about the pain, i would recommend taking something for pain before you go, and bringing some kind of sugary snack with u, so in the middle of it, u can eat it, supposely it hurts more when ur sugar level drops, (not sure if it's true, I have just heard it a few times). good luck

The area will feel pretty tender for at least a few days afterwards. Mostly, I find the pain more annoying than anything when the work is being done. It sure doesn't tickle but it's not unbearable.

I have one there and it didn't hurt that much it was just like a little scratching, nothing too hard to sit through, and after it was done it just felt like sunburn for a few days. Also it depends on how skinny you are I have some meat on me, but not that fat.

Its not to bad on the back. I found it more of grinding sensation over the backbone. The pain is bearable ,there are a lot more painful area's besides the back.
