What are the risks? Did it hurt a lot? Did it scar? Would you recommend it to someone with a mole on her chin that keeps getting bigger?

Have not had one personally, but have assisted the doctor in removal of many. Does it hurt? No, at least not when it's done. They use a local anesthetic to deaden the skin and control the blood supply to the mole. Afterwards, you can usually manage the tenderness with Tylenol and leaving it alone. Does it scar? That depends on your personal healing ability and where the mole is at. For a squat mole, doctors usually make an elliptical incision, which lines up afterwards like a straight line. On the face they use very very tiny suture material, and usually take the stitches out in 3-4 days, so scarring is as minimal as it can get. After that, it depends on how you heal and scar. If you tend to make keloid scars, then it can get ugly. If not, and you use a scar reduction cream like Mederma, then it can be nearly unnoticeable. If you have a really huge mole you want removed, your best be would be to visit a plastic surgeon, or a surgeon who specializes in facial surgery. They would be the best at leaving the least scarring in the end. A surgical scar is usually a very thin line and after a while it's not really noticeable in most cases anyway. It won't be nearly as noticeable as the mole, and at least you won't have to worry about it going cancerous on you. I think the major risk is the formation of a keloid scar, which would need to be redone by a plastic surgeon. Before you have the procedure, they will cover all the possible risks to the procedure, but keep those in perspective. They have to tell you about the risk of the one time, one in a zillion chance thing as well as the more common garden variety- everything from the one reported instance of somebody's chin falling off to somebody didn't like the scar, and all the points in between. I've assisted doing it for ages, and the keloid scar is about the worst I'm aware of. We've had people who bled more than we expected, but nothing we couldn't handle. We've never lost anyone, never had anyone with major complications during the procedure or afterwards. I've been assisting with them now for nearly 25 years, so I think I can say it's a pretty safe procedure, and if I needed it done, I'd do it.

I had two moles removed, one from my upper lip right under my nose that was 1/4 inch accross, and another from right in front of my ear. It was done under local anesthesia, and was completely painless. It wasn't even particularly sore after the surgery. I had to protect the area from the sun to prevent scarring, but other than that I had no precautions. It healed with absolutely no scarring....you can't even tell a mole was ever there. I am definately glad I did it.

I had one removed at the base of my nose. The only thing that hurt was the numbing. It burned a little after the numbness left. It left a tiny scar for awhile. I put vitamin E oil on it and now there is no visable scar at all. I would definately do it again if needed.

You can call your insurance company and ask them but it's something they normally cover. I had a mole on my neck taken off, nothing wrong with it just irritating. My insurance covered the costs. It was done in my doctors office, he gave me a shot to numb the area so it didn't really hurt.
