I live in Hong Kong, when I first arrived 23yrs. ago Hong Kong (a British Colony) was polluting China.
The smog in this city today is as bad as when Sao Paolo was at it's worst. Despite Hong Kong changing from a manufacturing to a service economy (like the UK)
This is because huge industry just across the border does not (for purely financial reasons) adopt clean standards.
It was Hong Kong that showed them what they wanted and how they could get it.
But times change. What was acceptable (through ignorance) in the past, must today be stopped.
We learned the hard way about pollution and progress, it is our responsibility to convince China of it's danger before it becomes reality.
Buying their products because it is cheaper, just makes us hypocrites. You cannot say you want clean air and water, then buy from a polluter.
If the consumers insisted China would change tomorrow.

China (and other 'developing' countries) don't always use the cutting edge of technology. A lot of the time they use the same type of processes that the 'developed' world stopped using ages ago. Modern processes generally produce less pollution as they have been developed in a culture that doesn't like pollution.

The issue with buying their stuff comes into some complex economics. Cheap labour in China compounds with the fact that the older, polluting processes are often cheaper than the modern processes. Due to it's economic situation, these countries are often given concessions about pollution.

It's one big quagmire, and I'm glad I'm not the one who has to sort it out.

There is technology available to control pollution from factories. China doesn't use it very well right now. They use a lot of coal to make power, which is one of the dirtier ways of doing it, and contributes the most to global warming.

The bottom line is that they are a huge source of pollution which then gets carried by the air to other countries. They could do things better, and signs are they may be starting to do just that.

Well, it all boils down to human behaviour. Nobody wants to be blamed, and when there is a more obvious person to blame, then we'll most probably point our fingers at him. Like, "How can I be the one to blame for the Earth's pollution? We signed the Kyoto Protocol! But looks over there, at China! They're the ones who are spewing out carbon dioxide, let's go after them!" and while all this goes on, just like you said, we're all buying products made in China. How ironic. But since we're on the topic of pollution, why don't we blame America as well? They're the ones who aren't producing much (compared to China) and yet they're still the ones who are giving out the most carbon dioxide on Earth.

He has performed that, besides the fact that if asking international locations like India, China or Mexico to supply up their new got here upon business ability is like asking a baby to supply lower back all of their Christmas toys. exceedingly given the certainty that further and extra scientists are popping out disproving his "guy made international warming" voodoo disaster. As I knew they might at last. Gore has made hundreds of thousands from his international warming marketing campaign. the only factor he cares approximately is giving his next 50 thousand dollar speech or merchandising greater carbon credit from his agencies he owns.

An excellent point - we shouldn't complain about the damage we cause as a result of our need to want and have many of the things in life that aren't necessities.

because they produce as in the last century; they don't mind the environment because there is no organisations as Greenpeace.
Most of their energy comes from coal of very low quality.
If they don't accept the same rules as we do, its unfair competition.
