The nastiest things that are said to me in my life are here in this section, Christians in this section say the nastiest things to non-believers or people who have a faith different to their own. I don't understand how the people who claim to be the most gracious are the most cruel and unforgiving. I know that there are a few Christians on here who appear to be kind and non-judgmental but they are the minority. I am Spiritual and I try to do no harm to others and treat people with respect, I believe whatever gets you through the night, and whatever floats your boat. But when I see Christians make such nasty, sanctimonious remarks it makes me feel glad that I do not carry this nastyness and negativity around in my soul. Why, if you are Christian do you have to be nasty and derogatory to people who do not share your belief? Is this not contrary to the very nature of your faith?

To clarify to me spirit refers to my morality, intellect and mind. To those who have made the assumption that I have not read the bible may I just say I grew up in a religious family went to a catholic school, partook in the caticism, i.e. to a degree studied the bible, my journey took me from religion to being agnostic and laterly I can say (with knowledge of the differences) I am an atheist.

As someone from a non-christian faith, I totally relate to what you're saying.
In the last 24 hours I've received two hate mails from christians and several answers to benign questions that attacked me as a person (not my question), in addition to a few threats.

It's the way of things with the majority of christians on here. It's safer for them to do it over the net because they wouldn't have the intestinal fortitude to say this kind of thing to my face or to yours.

I say the majority because I have seen a handful on here who reflect what the bible says Jesus preached. They ARE the minority, but are shining examples of their belief.

Just be thankful you haven't been infected by that kind of sickness (hate, disrespect, blindness), and have sympathy for those that do. It must be a miserable life for them.

Many blessings on your path,
K

If someone is saying nasty things to you here, your are probably holding yourself open to them.

The only quips made here are those made by opposing forces when the questions merit such responses.

For example this question:

Whats the difference between the baptist & luthern beleifs?

Didn't get any derragotory or nasty answers.

Do you believe that YOU ARE A MONKEY!!!?

This question got quips

This question

Allah means severe punishment (sura 2/165/6)?
what is the use of a god who only says he will punish people? i wonder if allah is a prison guard?

lollllll

Got some nasty replies.

I'm an atheist and I can relate to you. I actually had a friend who didn't know that I was one and I heard her say that she felt like she could never be friends with an atheist. I didn't hold that against her. People sometimes say things they don't really mean.

Anyways, I think most Christians are respectful. I think it's just a few people out there that give the rest a bad name.

It's the same with the atheists. There are some atheists on here that can get condescending. I think most people are decent though.

To answer your question, you are not an atheist. If you believe in spirituality and some kind of god or deity then you definitely not an atheist.

People will always judge other based on their religion, whether that religion says for them to do that or not. People who are critical and think about the great question in life know that every religion has some great truths but also may great shortfalls in them. No one religion has all the answers.

If people from other religions are critical of you because you question their religion, then they are just feeling a little in adequate in their faith. Do not take it personally.

Good Luck.

True believers in Christ are none of the things you stated above. True believers in Christ know and understand that our mission is to simply "put the bug in other people's ears" and let God do the rest. It is not our place, any of us, to judge whether or not what a person is doing will condem them. That right is up to the One true Creator. For those who are not receptive to that word, God teaches us to "wipe the dust from thy foot and move on".

If I may say, however. It seems to me that your belief of being an atheist is false with one simple statement from above..."I am Spiritual...". That statement alone suggests that you are not an atheist. Atheists believe in nothing. Being spiritual as you put it points to evidence that you at least believe in something. Seems to me you might be classified more as an Agnostic than Athiest.

Personally, I do not classify myself as a Christian. I am appauled at the Christian church nowadays. People worship the Lord with their mouths and not their hearts anymore, just as Christ predicted would happen. I don't need anyone to explain the Word to me. All I have to do is ask the Lord to open my mind and my heart to the truth of His word and I will understand.

Something I tell everyone.... That little "gut instinct" that everyone has telling them right and wrong...Listen to that.... It is God's connection to your soul and His way of communicating with you to guide you in the direction you are supposed to go. You can hear His voice if you have an open heart and open mind too.....

Blessed Be....

..
..... Those are NOT Christians.
Every generation has its zealots.
Being that Christianity makes up a majority of all believers, it would be normal to see a higher number of fundie nuts. *sigh*

Do not allow a hypocrite or fallen angel, to influence your own personal spirituality.

God Bless,

First Of all , I am a christian. Some christians dont know how to be "Christ Like" which means, some people dont know how to respond to non-believers . And Im sorry you had to deal with so much hate, its not that we hate you, but we hate and dont quite understand why people dont believe what we believe. There are so many religions out there, but its not about the religion. Its about the relationship with Jesus Christ. You can still be saved and a christian and not go to church. Church and good deeds dont get you into heaven, but only salvation does.
I think sometimes christians dont know how to respond to people like you, and so they are harsh and tell you staright forward. Some athiest need to hear it firm, and some need to be more approached with love and respect.
Your probably someone who needs to be accepted and loved before people can reach your soul and heart.
But the truth is that No Belief in Jesus, No salvation, then No enter into Heaven.
If you havent read the Bible, I would recommend it, there is alot of hope, truth, and love in it. Alot of answers to our everyday life, we cant HAVE all the answers, but I really hope and pray you find what you are looking for in life.
Also dont compare every christian to be alike because we arn't. Some christians are not CHRIST LIKE, and Some are. Just be opened to them, and you may have some good experiences :)
God BLess.

I'm not sure how the additional details relate to the question, but be thankful that there are genuinely loving (ie, not just loving towards people who agree with them) Christians here (and there are) - even if most of us could name them on the fingers of one hand.

As for whether or not you're an atheist, you're an atheist if you believe there is no god. Other than that, you can be what you like.

I have noticed the same thing with many that claim to be religious, I thought they were supposed to be caring and love everyone, but, this just doesn't seem to be the case with many. The nastiest responses that I have received are from those who consider themselves believers.

It is because deep down, underneath it all, there is some kind of awareness that they are wrong and all this time they have poured into their beliefs has been for nothing. Their fear of death compels them to shut out as forcefully as possible anything that might bring those unacknowledged doubts to the surface.
