The body processes calories the same whether it's 3 p.m. or 3 a.m. Yes, your body's metabolism slows while you're sleeping so it's not burning as many calories. However, your body still needs calories in order to run basic functions like breathing and heart pumping. As long as your are staying within your calorie budget the time that you consume those calories does NOT matter. Late night eating only becomes a problem if it's late night OVEReating.

When you eat late at night you're body has less time and therefore less likely to burn off those calories.
If you eat at like 8pm but you're one of those people that is up and moving around until 3am, well then you're probably still in line with what other people do eating at like 6pm and going to bed at 11pm for example.
Calorie intake is key but also how you burn those calories. Ideally if you're eating healthy food and exercising regularly it won't matter so much the time of day.
Speak with a doctor to see what types of food they would recommend for whatever you health goal is. Most seem to suggest several small meals throughout the day as opposed to several larger ones because it's better for your metabolism

It's a myth. A calorie's just a calorie, even if you are going straight to bed. Your body doesn't stop using calories when you go to sleep! In fact, eating temporarily raises your metabolism, so you might even be doing good, your metabolism will be higher when you go to sleep.

I think that your body doesn't digest food as well during the night, because you aren't being as active, and that's why it might cause weight gain.

I heard that on Oprah, i think.
I guess if you eat a lot, and then sleep, you don't give your body a chance to burn off the calories, which in the end makes you fat.
