Throughout my life, I had always maintained a schedule of 10pm to 8am getting my recommended 10 hours of sleep until high school. I kept going to bed later and later until I would fall asleep at 2am and have to wake up at 7am for school. 5 hours wasn't enough to keep me going; I was constantly miserable in school, and I could not concentrate on my homework after school because of lack of sleep due to the previous night. It may sound ridiculous, but I attempted to go to bed at 6pm and woke up at 2am this morning, getting a fine 8 hours of sleep. It is now 7:48am, and I am more lively in the morning than I have been in a very long time. I would like to know if it is unhealthy to do this, and if so, exactly why.

Studies have proved that a 20 minute nap in the afternoon works wonders for regenerating you.

Frankly if you get into the habit of poor sleep it becomes hard to break the cycle and it will do harm to your body. Studies have proven that lack of sleep causes so many secondary diseases.

I was getting heart palpatations and feeling unwell. By adding even a couple of hours of sleep or having a nap, even a quick 20 minute or one hour nap revitalizes you.

I would not get into the habit of weird hours like that since your schedule does not revolve around it. Just get to bed earlier...9 pm should be good enough. If you're up early in the morning use that time to exercise and you should feel a lot better during the day.

Or if you need the study time but feel too burned out, have a nap after school wake up and do your homework, then go back to sleep when you are sleepy. You may end up breaking your sleep pattern in two, but if it gives you the energy you need to meet your schedule why not? Just don't oversleep the nap, refresh yourself afterwards (take a walk) and then get to the homework.

A lot of farmers used to take "siestas" during the day, sleep periods, and it worked for them.

It's perfectly fine. Think of it as being in a different time zone. It's very good that you made a change to get your 8 hours of sleep.

I'm in a highly competitive high school too, and it's like everybody sleeps about 5-6 hours every night, and some even less. I can't take stuff like that. I have to go to bed by 1130 or so, or I'll fall asleep in class.

I know I'll never be able to wake up at 2am, so I don't bother trying- I'd be too depressed and lonely. I'd probably just end up sleeping like 14 hrs :O

lolx. anyway, yeah, it's perfectly fine and good for you.

I would prefer going to bed at 11pm and get up at 7am in the morning personally. I can't see it hurt you going to bed at 6pm and then get up a 2am if that make you happy keep doing it.

Yes it is completly fine & it is safe(keep doing it if it works), alot of people have so many diffrent sleep scheduals...what ever works for you is the best, as long as you get going and get it done : )

however my sllep schedual is usually going to bed @ 5:45-6:00 A.M and waking up @ anyteime between 7:00 A.M & 10:00 i dont get much sleep so i ocassionaly take a nap....but if i had my choice i would prefer 6P.M to 2 A.M

Try the Supernanny technique - the first time she gets up, give her a little cuddle, a kiss and put her back in bed. If she does it again the same night, pick her up, put her back in bed, but only say "goodnight". Third time, pick her up and put her back in bed silently, with no cuddles or kisses. Repeat that if she persists. Repeat from beginning each night. She'll probably eventually accept that she cannot sleep with you.

I don't think it's unhealthy...I'm sort of the opposite, my ideal sleep schedule is 6am-noon, and it works dandy for me (I work nights).

Your times in particular are more 'natural', as they follow the light/dark cycle of the sun more closely.

I say go with it if it works for you.

I think that as long as you get your 8 hours you'll be fine. It shouldn't really matter when.
