It's different on different airlines, and usually it depends on whether it's a domestic or international flight too. If you go to your airline's website they will tell you.

Check with your airline. Here are the requirements for Delta:
Weighs less than 40 pounds (18 kg).
Does not exceed 45 inches when you total length plus width plus height.
Fits easily into our SizeWise® unit (approximately 22"x14"x9").
Fits in an overhead bin or underneath the seat in front of you.

it depends who you're flying with and where. generally you are safe with one piece of luggage that's not over 20 kg. you get more if you're flying in and out of north america for some reason.. 32 kg.
