There's bound to be heaps of books- go visit a good bookshop and ask them to point you in the right direction and then pick the one you like the most, people are all individual in how they prefer books to be set out, how many pictures, graphs etc they prefer so if you do want to increase your knowledge- always a good thing- you will only actually read the book you enjoy reading.

Unfortunately, a lot of geography books can be as bad as a really boring history book. A shame, really, because geography determines so many things.
Geography is not just a list of facts about capitals, rivers, etc. Geography can determine the success of a battle and the need to steal land from a neighboring country has made many cultures lose their souls! What they want to do is change borders so they can have more resources (water in the Middle East right now is at stake).
I don't know one book that explains geography this way but there are plenty of books that help you prepare for tests if you need to just know answers to questions they will ask.
Quick. What's the capital of Alaska - a state whose geography determines how people travel (by plane - they even deliver pizza there by plane).

Ok, I understand. It's tough when you really don't like something. But, you know, I think it's pretty good that you understand the importance. Ususally when a student doesn't like something they see absolutely no value in it at all, lol.
If you are interested in learning US geography, there are many different ways to go about it, but the only thing that will work is for you to find something that sparks your interest.
Stores that sell homeschool books are full of test prep books that will give you the info you desire, but they can be dry and will do nothing to spark interest in you.
About.com has an e-mail newlsetter in the homeschooling section about the fifty states. Each week (I think) they send you info to two states. It covers the basics, and includes interesting facts, recipes to try, things like this. fiftystates.com is full of interesting facts about the states, too.
You could use that to put a notebook together. Just working on a project like that would give you tons of info plus retention.
Another option is to read some historical fiction that sparks your interest, then research the region in the book.
the library is full of very interesting books about states, regions, countries.
Use your natural interests to focus your studies. Are you interested in weather, look up weather info on the states. Do you like to cook or eat? then try a recipe from each state.
Are you in to art? then invest in a detailed coloring book of the birds and flowers of each state (not a little kid book, but a nice detailed one, they are great)

if you are interested in world geo, then use the news to guide your studies. Every time you hear a country mentioned, look it up. If you already know where it is, then find out what's around it.
these are just tips and tricks I've used to make studiying geography a little more relevant.

Down load Google earth and enjoy learning about other places. I think you will learn more with that program than any book.

I you have questions that google earth don't answer then it is on the net.

get a worldwide holiday brochure, and imagine yourself visiting the places, if you have an interest you will learn easier.
Try not to look at it like a chore, think of your world travels
