The best way to give up excessive alcohol without groups or meetings would be to simply stop drinking it. Spend the money you save on a hobby or interest and whenever you want to drink go to the hobby you've replaced drinking with and do that.
If youv'e been drinking excessively for a long time ( 5 years or longer) then I would recommend going to a doctor and at least one or two group sessions before trying to quit because people who drink excessively for long periods of time and quit cold turkey can suffer delusions. The delusions are referred to as Delerium Tremens, and they can be as severe as visual halucinations and the feeling of spiders crawiling all over you. A doctor could prescribe Valium or Xanax, which you could take for about three months to help ween your brain from the alcohol.

Try to adopt an early morning exercises routine,.. such as walking. Find a partner if possible,.. helps w/ accountability & consistency. Knowing that you're getting up early the next morning will help you opt for no alcohol the night before.
If you're getting a little fidgety in the evening and feel the urge to drink,.. pop a melatonin and go on to bed,.. nothing wrong with going to bed at 8:30,.. especially if you're getting up at 5:00 am to walk.
It may take a couple of weeks to fall into this routine, but once you do,.. you'll find that you actually LOOK FORWARD to walking every morning,.. you'll feel better, more energetic and alcohol will become less and less a part of your life.

You could just realise that its bad for you. Perhaps you should take a trip to the pub and stay sober and look how all the drunk idiots behave, or you could just walk past some pubs early on a saturday and sunday morning and check out all the piles of vomit along the pavements. That is bound to make you vow to never drink again.
Or you could just think about this logically; you pay money to buy alcohol, to behave like a moron, to go to bed with your head spinning, to wake up feeling like ****, and to waste the rest of the following day. Come on, have a little more respect for yourself!

I'm sure it is possible to stop drinking without groups or meetings but I'm also pretty sure that to stay stopped you need some form of support for the first few years ,trying to do it on your own may possibly work for some very lucky people but in general it is a recipe for disaster, everybody needs support in difficult times and regardless of what you may have heard about groups and meetings they do work

It depends on the person and the situation. Some take medicine like antabuse. Some have done it by themselves and they weren't really addicted. Some prayed and asked God for help with this. The rest were not successful without going to meetings.

I would just like to say 'well done you' for realising you have a problem and want to stop. If you are a very heavy regular drinker then abstinence is going to cause tremors (the shakes) and nausea/vomitting, this however will not last longer than a week but it will be tough so you have to have a lot of willpower, you need to remove urself from friends who drink excessively, and situations where you might be tempted, take up a hobby go to the gym. If you find you still cant give up then go to your doctor and they will give you a pilll which makes you vomit if you drink alcohol, good luck please do this for yourself xxx

I did it gradually.
I used to 'fool' myself into drinking spirits with gradually more and more mixer in it. Or drink beer with more and more lemonade in it, until I was almost just drinking lemonade.
After that I just had to stop drinking the lemonade.
The trick is to also limit yourself to only a set number of drinks in your usual sized glass.
Take your time to drink them, don't just swill them back, also if you have the will power stop when you start to feel a little drunk and drink just soft drinks.
You could also try to get into fitness and healthy living. Try to join a gym, a martial arts class or get a personal trainer.

I was drinking lots. I made a lot of people unhappy and made myself quite ill. 6 months ago i knew i had to do something. I stopped smoking which also meant i had to stop drinking as they kinda went hand in hand.
If i can do it anyone can.
Stay in control of the situation by removing yourself from the situation .
Tell your friends and relatives you need some support and encouragement, they love you and will help you.
Soon someone will tell you you are doing great, that means a lot.
I wish you luck, it is hard but you can do it!

I, myself used to drink excessively, a bottle of whisky a day. I didn't go to AA or any other such thing, what I did do is write down how much it was costing me, and focused on that. I still enjoy a drink but no where near as bad as before. Good Luck
