I think Jesus understood the kingdom of God, but felt that people in his days could not fathom an understanding themselves. He explained to them that he could not speak of things concerning the kingdom of heaven, because they had trouble understanding his messages about earthly things.

For now we see through a veil dimly. Then, we shall see him face to face. It is my belief that the veil is being lifted and we do have a better understanding than those who lived in Jesus' time, but we still have eyes that are blind.

The law and the prophets were until John [ the baptist ], since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it. KJV Bible.

Probably a vague understanding from a lifetime of thought and ponderance on the meaning of things, based in part on what he already knew....
And he communicated it.... well.... poorly, I'd imagine. Communicating the grander and more complex ideas is always an awkward and problematic process.... especially when trying to convey them to a group with lesser understanding and indeed lesser capacity for understanding. The disciples clearly misunderstood all that Jesus was trying to say...... and the result is the christianity of today that we all know and roll our eyes at. If Jesus himself had written the new testament it might have been a whole different matter.

His kingdom is not of this world. Most things in His kingdom are opposite of what we would think. To go up you must go down, the humble are elevated, the rich should become poor, it is better to give than receive, turn the other cheek, follow His perfect example.

He referred to God as his father with the affection he has towards God. He referred to it as the kingdom of his father. Not essentially he meant his father. he expressed his affection towards God by calling him his father.
