I have a 5 year old jack russel who is extremely fit and healthy. My dad bought the senior dog food by mistake. The senior dry food has extra milk essentials and stuff and i thought that it wasn't good to give it to my dog. I told dad to donate the food to the local dog shelter but my neightbour said it wouldn't make a difference as the dog turns 7 next year. but that's a whole year away and 7 is the minimum senior age and my dog is really healthy. We donated the food anyway. Would it have not made a difference or been bad?

You would've been fine. In fact, Hill's Science Diet has a formula for Senior dogs 5+ and then a different formula for 7+. Considering how healthy your dog is, you would've been fine. The worst it can do, giving it to an adult dog for a long period of time is cause your dog to put on a few extra pounds and typically there's more fiber in a Senior diet so he would've had to poop more frequently. Also, with every diet change, you have the chances of it causing diahrea.

It's fine, my niece's dog is a jack russell too and she is two but eats senior food all the time with vet's ok, it's all she will eat and she's quite a big girl. If she's fit and healthy it won't hurt her although she may eat a little more than she does of her regular food.

if it is 5 now how can it turn 7 next year. it would be better if you feed it the food you have been feeding it. go ahead and give the food to the shelter. if the dog is very active it needs the food made for it.

It would not have hurt, but with any food your not really supposed to switch with out transitioning in the new food. I actually have two dogs, and one was on senior, one on puppy. I ended up just gibing both adult because they would eat the opposite food! But to answer you question ,it would have been fine.
