Because the Army pays me $63,000 a year, full health care for my family among other benefits after 7 years of service. I have a BA and wouldn't make that money on the civilian side (i',m an E-6, not even an officer).
When you calculate salary, you have to include the housing allowance, subsistence allowance and other entitlements. My housing allowance alone is $1800 per month on top of my salary.

Because they can get benefits there that they wouldn't otherwise get, or a job and they can't get outside of the army. Or it could be that they like to kill people and that is a legit way. Oh for peace and compassion and love in the world. In any case an army is necessary, if only for peace sake. Sounds funny, but think about it.

men and women have joined the army for many different reasons and the basic reason is to conserve freedom that so many take for granted, I joined to do what so many wont,i have seen and done more things than most people can imagine, and i would do it all again given the chance, the question of why men still join the army is very broad and can be answered so many different ways, but no matter what they join for the army its self always has the same mission to defend freedom

It offers many things in life that some would otherwise not find obtainable, such as the opportunity for a higher education or learning a specialty skill for use in civilian life, good physical conditioning and the chance to see the world at Government expense.

It gives you a step up out of poverty. If you can manage to stay with it,the Army will offer you room and board, medical and dental, a steady source of income, and the offer of paid college once your term of service is up. It pads a resume well and gives those who would otherwise have no future a chance at making a decent living in the future. Not a bad price to pay for a 3 or 4 year sacrifice. Not to mention sign on bonuses of up to $20,000.00 if you complete basic training.

I just has a guy in my office sign up for the army. He has two kids and a wife at home. He feels he is doing his patriotic duty.
I will join up once the Bush twins enlist.

The same reason woman do, it's a good life with good benefits. College isn't for everyone and neither is working at McDonald's or Walmart. There is nothing wrong with serving your country.

Family traditon, wanting to learn a trade, patriotism, and a bunch of other reasons. Each person has his or her own reason for joining, as many reasons as there are stars.

way too many to list but usually the top ones are pride, patriotism, want to pay for college, travel adventure, seeking a challenge in life, those are just a few reasons.
