Go to the pharmacy and purchase a nail coating that is designed to stop nail biters. Put it on all of his fingers so he cant substitute. Its tastes disgusting but wont harm. The terrible taste should put him off putting his thumb in his mouth

Buy a thumb sucking repelent to use to stop tha action. But, also take note of when he does it. Most imes it is just a habit to be broken. Like weanng one from the bottle. Sometimes it is a sign that there is something wrong or missing that had not caught your attention.Often to often it gets classified as just a habit, for the comfort of the parent so as not to have to deal! Knowing which one helps. Adults forget a 5yr. olds way of thinking is not the same and cannot be the same. But a adult has had the experience of a 5 yr. olds way of thinkng. What we thought real and true then, is now stupid, or trivial a no "big deal". Teaching him to find a better use for his hands helps. Thumbsucking is security. So, to make them feel insecure by belittling, scaring, ect...is defeating the very purpose.

None of those awful tasting things work. The truth is that it is your sons thumb and if you try to discourage it he'll do it when you aren't looking.

He is five. Tell him he needs to stop. Then give him a gameboy so he'll use both hands.

I used to stuck my first finger when I was little. It drove my mom nuts! She rubbed a cut jalepeno pepper on all of my fingers and told me that if I put them in my mouth it would be hot. Well, I stuck my finger in my mouth and needless to say, I never did it again. I think that I was about 3 or 4 at the time.

There are products you can buy to put on his thumbs(tastes awful) to make him not want it in his mouth. My sister-in-law put socks on her son's hands when he went to bed so he wouldn't do it in his sleep. Good luck, it's a hard habit to break.
