And act as if you are being totally normal? Would this be a good party gag or an act you can totally gag on?

It is better to speak in a language which most of the gathering can understand .....

Its fine if all in the conversation can understand. But its not acceptable if some cant understand as its the same as if two people were whispering to each other. If you have something to say that others shouldn't hear then do it in privacy where no one will feel offended. Imagine you where holding a conversation with two other people and the two suddenly started speaking in another language that you couldn't understand.....

Depending on the situation ,it can be downright rude. If , for example ,you are in a group of 6 people and suddenly 2 persons in the group start conversing in a strange lingo.......it's not funny .
What I normally do in such a situation is to hold up my arms for quiet among the rest of the group and politely ask the two why the need for secrecy.
It is not appropriate unless a translator is required.
