The first question is "why"?

Unless you are rebuilding the rear wheel or are changing gear ratios there really isn't a need to remove the cassette. However, since you asked....

1) Remove wheel from the bicycle. Remove the quick release (anf if necessary, the axle spacers) from the wheel
2) Obtain the correct cassette lockring remover, a chain whip, and a big adjustable wrench
3) Wrap the chain whip around a cog
4) insert the lockring remover into the lockring
5) attach the wrench to the remover
6) While holding the chain whip still, turn the wrench counterclockwise to remove the lockring
7) Slide the cassette off the freehub

Check the new book by the editors of BICYCLING (www.bicycling.com) now available----it will absolutely be helpful for ANY rider! It takes a lot of maintenance when it comes to the bicycle's cogs ( freewheel or otherwise)---and I suggest you allow a bike mechanic to inspect your cogset---the availability of 8/9 speed sets from Shimano ( LX Deore and XT,or the high-end XTR ) would be a good choice---check Price Point (www.pricepont.com)

There's an awesome guide at parktool.com

Removing it is pretty easy if you have the right tools.

Good luck with it!
