There's a billiards store on University and somewhere between 9th and 12th that is supposed to have pretty good chips. I haven't been there in a while and I'd only recommend that you go look if you live close by.
I live in Manhattan and got a good set on eBay. The shipping cost is typically offset by the much lower prices.

buypokerchips.com, bought a set there three years ago. Great quality and better value. Cheapest I could find. They also have a trade in program for upgrading your chips.

I don't know if this will help much, but they have great ones on ebay. I got my fiance a really nice set for about $40-$50.
