As far as what the mainstay foods of Canada are, depends very much on where you are at. If you are on either coast, Seafood will be common, while on the prairies, beef will be prime.

As another answerer mentioned, Canada is so multi-cultural, that you can get just about any kind of cuisine, especially in the Cities. Sometimes it's hard to find "good ole Canadian food" .. i.e. defined by my hubby as meat and potatoes, LOL (he's a prairie boy).

I would have to say poutine:) It's my favourite food that is Canadian. It became very popular, so popular in fact that Poutine flavoured potato chips have been made! It can be made the classic way with homemade fries and gravy and real cheese curd, or it can be purchased at many fast food chains in Canada. The fastfood poutine is still good, though it's made with McDonalds type fries and instant gravy. Most fastfood chains in Canada such as; McDonalds, Dairy Queen, New York Fries, A&W, and Burger King will have poutine on their menu:)

Hope I helped

On the west coast or "wet coast" as we fondly call it, seafood for dinner and back bacon for breakfast is very popular. Salmon (smoked, bbq'd, gravlox, etc), halibut, ling cod, scallops, oysters, dungeness crab and spot prawns can all be caught locally and found on most restaurant menus. Have you ever tried bacon wrapped scallops? Absolutely amazing, I bet you can't just try one only.

Canada has a vast amount of ethnic cuisine, so, at least in the larger cities, you can get just about any food you want.
