Xanadu or Zanadu (Chinese: 上都; pinyin: Shàngdū) was the summer capital of Kublai Khan's Mongol Empire, which covered much of Asia.

Xanadu is a term that has come to mean an idyllic, mythical place, much like what we think about Shangri-La. This word actually came from a poem written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge in the late 1700's, and the title of this poem is "Kubla Khan."
