Foxes dont bark, they are not capable of doing it. The best they can do is a very loud yap that will go for miles, or something that sounds like a whimper. Neither do they howl for a mate. Once they pair up they are together for ever unlike some humans I know. You can take this as true because I am a reformed hunter, not with horses and hounds but with a gun, and no unlike jonny I have never shot anything accidenally. When I was young I came from a poor family that needed food and the farmers would let me catch rabbits for food for my children if I shot foxes. I regret every time I have done it. They dont howl, and the dont bark, just yap. I have even had foxes coming to me if I kept very still and smelling all over like a dog would. It makes me cry to think I did that to them and now I am so anti hunting I would shoot a person before any anymal. I know I will get some stick for this but at least I have told someone now. For the answers above, Foxes are monogamous.

Yes.Foxes have a wide vocabulary of noises, and each call can be made with a variety of pitches. Foxes make noises throughout the year, but reach their peak in mid-winter.
Each call probably serves several functions. It may enable the caller to identify itself and its position, or communicate with other members of the caller's group - its neighbours and rivals, offspring and mates. There are four types of fox calls. The call most often heard is the 'wow-wow-wow'. A second type is the screech - also known as the vixen's scream, although dog foxes also make this noise. It is thought that vixens make this call to attract males.
The other noises are made when the foxes are in contact. One is called gekkering, or clikketing, a mechanical staccato noise which sounds similar to the clicking noise made by a football supporters rattle. Often interspersed with gekkering is a collection of whines and whimpers which can be heard when foxes greet each other. Foxes never growl or snarl.

a baby bunny that was cornered by some cats made a sound like a crying baby. A shrill shriek. I went over to see what was going on. It was totally motionless with a bunch of cats sitting there waiting for it to move. I thought they had killed it, but I picked it up and it wasn't moving, it's eyes were open. I felt it and there was no blood or anything so I held him, got the cats some cat food to distract them and layed the bunny in the grass across the street. When I went to check on him a minute later he was gone. The scream saved his life, as did the laying there motionless with all those cats there.

Foxes howl too.Vixens often do it in winter to attract a mate.
They also yap and whine and growl and make most of the other noises dogs do.

Foxes make a variety of sounds, from a high-pitched wail to a short, yipping bark, plus chuckles and "churrr"-type sounds

Foxes around here make noises like cats fighting - we're always watching them on the garden, having thought initially it was a cat fight.
