In Canada we have universal health care. It costs less per capita than the USA spends per capita subsidizing their for profit health care system that many of your citizens can not afford.
Our biggest problem right now is dealing with the drug companies shipping our lower priced drugs into the higher priced US markets and creating shortages here.

In an ideal world, basic health care should be available to everyone. It upsets me when I hear about people who have got seriously ill because something minor could not be treated due to lack of funds. Despite the recent problems, the NHS in the UK provide basic health care either free or affordable. Unfortunately it is not that easy to set up this kind of service. Part of the school curriculum should include health education. I believe that people would be far healthier if they were educated in how to look after themselves.

That and auto insurance are the two biggest rip offs that we suffer with here in the USA.
Why can't we do like other countries (with auto) and only pay premiums for a certain amount of time and then it be free. Only start resuming payments if there is a wreck.
Same complaint with health care! It is ridiculous! We pay so much in taxes that it should MORE than cover a good portion of health coverage!

I don't understand, is this a trick question? There are poor people right now who are dying of things that can be fixed by modern medicine because they can't afford the insurance or the treatment.

There is something wrong with the system, and I believe there's a lot of greed on the part of the drug companies, ect.
Preventive medicine is not being addressed properly, and people are into the stupid drugs that are advertised on TV. They even know them by name, and this is terribly stupid. For example, most people know what "Lipitor" is for, and the fact that they even are aware of it and know is dumb.

Affordable would be good, but the first thing to ask is "who is paying for it?". The government? Nonsense, the only money they have is what they get from you in taxes, so it is you that is paying. Your employer? Well, you could have the same money in extra wages and in most cases, that is what happens. I think we have to wake up to the idea that no matter what label it wears, the only place the money comes from is from us. Directly or not, it our bucks. So, when the politicians paint their rosy pictures, we need to ask then exactly where the money is going to come from. Our wallets, in the end.

They just made it mandatory in the state of Oregon by putting it on the voting ballots and letting the voters decide. And the voters passed it successfully.
