First of all, we all have a naturally ocurring chemical in our brains called dopamine that has the exact same effect as opiates. It kills pain, makes you motivated, makes you ahppy, etc. But the opiates are so much stronger than the dopamine that they give you intense feelings of pain relief, pleasure etc. When you take the drugs for a long period of time, they change your central nervous system and also cause your body to produce less dopamine, so when you don't take them you don't feel all those things that dopamine makes you feel. Your body also gets used to them and the changes they cause in your CNS cause severe discomfort when they are stopped. That is DEPENDANCE. ADDICTION is a behavior pattern that includes intense cravings, continuing to take the drugs in spite of detrimental consequences, and spending significant time obtaining and doing the drugs. Dependance does not mean you are addicted. Addiction is a behavioral issue. The drugs cause sedation because of the way they work in the brain.
