"The Champ" with Jon Voight and Ricky Schroeder was the original "Million Dollar Baby" screen play, both movies get in the blogbaba's top ten.
The Rocky movies get in there as does "Raging Bull" and "Somebody Up There Likes Me". A personal favorite is "Requiem for a Heavyweight" with Anthony Quinn, a remake of an old Bogart film. "White Hope" gives James Earl Jones an honorable mention. Ving Raimes as Don King was also an instant classic.
My favorite Boxing movie of all time is a documentary called "When we were Kings" about Ali/Forman in Ziare and I rank it as the best.

I would say the "Million Dollar Baby" because it depicted a woman's struggle to follow her dreams only to end in tragedy. There are actually a lot of boxing movies out there. "Raging Bull" and "Rocky" are among the best, and also critically acclaimed. "Cinderella Man" is also one good movie about boxing during the Depression era. Almost all boxing movies centered on males in the leading part. "Million Dollar Baby" is not. It stars Hillary Swank in the lead role, and she won a Best Actress Oscar for her work here.
Clint Eastwood did a very good job with this one, and he really deserved the Best Director Oscar which he won. It is the only boxing movie that really created a buzz afterwards because certain groups of people did not agree with the morality of the movie's ending, while others felt that the ending was justified. In other words, "MDB" not only gives us the thrills of the fights in the ring, but also makes us think of certain issues as well. If you have not seen it yet, I would recommend that you see it. However, if you're the type who can't sit through drama, then this movie might not be for you.

Raging Bull-
Based on the life story of jake lamotta. A far more important fighter than braddock knocking "cinderella man" out of the running.
Ali should have been good but it just plain sucked (could never buy smith as ali).
Rocky was a joke as a boxing movie- if you look at it as a drama about a boxer's life then it has some merit, otherwise no.
Million dollar baby was good up until clint's true plot was revealed- the movie had nothing to do with boxing it had to do with his preachy "mercy killing" and assisted suicide philosophy (which I happen to agree with- but I don't want to waste my money for a movie on his crap).

It was about a father and 3 brothers. the father was the trainer. The name in the movie was ortega. One of the sons die in the movie. That was a real good boxing movie.

Personally, I prefer the Cinderella Man. Russel Crowe had made a good portrayal of Jim Braddock in that movie. It is also very inspirational considering that it was based on an underprivileged family living in the era of the Great Depression. I thought it was moving.

Ric ~
I would have to write to you the 1956 film "The Harder They Fall" starring Humphrey Bogart. Bogart plays the role of Eddie Willis a Boxing writer and event promoter loosely based on the life of Harold Conrad. Eddie (Bogart) ends up broke after losing his Boxing Column and takes a job offered to him by Manager Nick Benko (Rod Steiger) a mobster who has this HUGE Argentinean boxer Toro Moreno (Mike Lane) who couldn't fight his way out of a paper bag. The fix is in on all of Toros fight everyone knows it except for him.
Anyway if you haven't seen the movie I won't write about the ending but Eddie starts to develop a conscience as Toro works his way up the ranks and is pitted against a vengeful ex champ played by Max Baer who won't take a pay off.
This movie is the closest thing to what really goes on in the boxing game especially given boxing current state with Valuev being a "Champion" Raging Bull is another great movie and so is "Somebody Up There Likes Me" Paul Newman does a great job and "The Great White Hope" James Earl Jones portrayal of Jack Johnson, you can't go wrong with any of these.
Thanks for the question Ric.

I like a lot of the answers here. One I haven't seen is "Undisputed" with Ving Rhames and Wesley Snipes. It's a boxing movie set in a prison. Rhames is the Heavyweight champ, sent to prison for rape. Wesley Snipes is the prison champ. Undefeated. The showdown is very well done.

I really like "Cinderella Man" and "Million Dollar Baby."
"Cinderella Man"- I liked how he handled his business (supporting his wife and children) and how his wife supported his play (back to boxing) despite her vocal disapproval of him fighting. Plus he was very humble and I didn't know until the end of the film he helped build the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. Awesome display of giving back.
Paul Giamatti was great.
"Million Dollar Baby"-Love Clint Eastwood's work. "Maggie" reminded me of a female James J. Braddock. Great movie and great cast. Clint's doing his thing.

"Gladiator" was awesome.
The 1992 movie where that kid was fighting in clubs to pay off his dads gambling debts. In the last fight he bareknuckles Brian Dennehy. Cuba Gooding Jr. also gave a good performance.
