MOST dogs do not get their ears cropped. You look at all the many hounds, and spaniels, poodles, setters, Tosa Inu, Labradors, Great Pyrenees, St. Bernards...ALL with long ears..Nope, the blood clot in the ear is uncommon, and I have NEVER heard of it being fatal..It will happen to a dog who has neglected ears, (ear mites, or grass awn) in the ears, when they shake their head so hard that it busts a vessel. Or when they are hit by a car..I used to raise Dobermans. I had more trouble with ear infections (the cropped edges getting sunburned and scabby) than with the long eared breed I raise now.
If you insist on having it done, then go ahead and just DO it, but don't try to justify it as anything but vanity..Yours, not the dog's..
If the pup is more than 11 weeks old, NO vet will do it..as they won't stand, and will just look like the Flying Nun.

That is ridiculous. Ear cropping is purely cosmetic, and doesn't stop dogs from getting ear infections. I've never had a cropped Dane in all the 30 years I've had Danes, and I've never had an ear infection either.
A burst blood vessel is caused by a trauma, such as the ear being hit by something.
Cropping is painful, unnecessary and expensive. And a terrific amount of work to get the ears to stand. If the crop fails, due to soft cartiledge or lack of caring for the taping, the dog is left with mutilated ears and a ruined appearance.
It is banned in all European countries, and the US is one of the few places where it is still allowed. The trend is to not crop, and it is no longer being taught in vet schools. Also many natural eared Danes are now taking championships in shows, so there is no need to crop for show purposes.

Is this a question or a statement?
I've read many AVMA journals: none of them find correlations between ear cropping and decreased chance of ear infections. However, if a dog does get an ear infection, the ear may not stand correctly after treatment for the infection. There was a study done that was published in a veterinary journal about TECA (total ear canal ablation) surgeries done to really bad infections and cropped ears dropping... so there is not a lack of clinical cases of dogs w infections and ear croppings.
Blood vessels tend to rupture due to trauma (hit by car or kicked) or high blood pressure, not ear cropping. If that were the case, we were having basset hounds dropping dead everywhere.

We have a Doberman with cropped ears, and more than anything it was the biggest hassel of taking him back to the vet every weekend for 2 months to have them re-wraped, and now 3 years later, he only makes them stand if he's listening closely to something. The cropped ears do look nice, but I would have to say you would probably have less problems leaving them floppy. As far as I know, ear cropping is for looks only, there is no health reasons for getting them cropped.

Getting a dog's ears cropped is just for show. Look at it this way, why isn't a basset hound's ears cropped if they were an issue? They drag all over the place but are never cropped. Just a case in point.

Well it does help cut down on infections... Your dog can get ear mites or yeast infection in the ear because they are floppy and water gets trapped and not able to dry out. Now bursting a blood vessel I've never heard of that but I'm sure it true.
